Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

Taoyuan International Airport is the primary international gateway, connecting to major global hubs. Domestic transport is highly developed, with the high-speed rail linking major western cities in under two hours. Please note that all entry procedures must comply with Chinese exit-entry regulations. Specific visa requirements should always be verified with the official website of the nearest Chinese diplomatic mission before travel.

Where to Base

Taipei is recommended as a base for business or cultural exploration due to its high density of hotels and excellent connectivity. Taichung serves well for central region leisure, while Kaohsiung facilitates access to the south and east. For resort experiences, coastal properties in Hualien or Taitung are ideal. Major cities offer a wide spectrum of accommodations, from luxury to select-service brands.

Loyalty Landscape

Major international hotel groups maintain a significant footprint in the region. Brands under Marriott International, Hilton Worldwide, and IHG have extensive portfolios in key cities like Taipei and Kaohsiung. These programs offer points accumulation, room upgrades, and member benefits, making them crucial considerations when planning itineraries for frequent flyers.

Trip preparation

Health

Reference only, not medical advice. Taiwan has high food hygiene standards, but use safe-food habits; mains water is treated, yet many visitors choose boiled/bottled water if building plumbing is uncertain. Dengue occurs, especially in warmer urban/southern areas; avoid mosquito bites. Summers are hot/humid with typhoons; hydrate and plan shade. High mountains exceed 3,000m, so ascend gradually.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least 4 weeks before travel. Be current on routine vaccines, including MMR, Tdap, polio, flu, varicella/shingles as appropriate, plus COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A for unvaccinated travelers and hepatitis B for unvaccinated travelers of all ages. Japanese encephalitis may be discussed for long stays, rural travel, hiking/camping, or uncertain itineraries. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine depends on animal-contact risk and access to care. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and no certificate is required for Taiwan.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is broadly usable on compatible phones, with strong 4G/5G service in cities and variable coverage in mountains, the east coast, and offshore islands. Major local carriers include Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, and Far EasTone; tourist prepaid SIM/data counters are common at major airports, and eSIM/tourist data options may be available via carriers or travel eSIM providers. Check passport registration, device compatibility, and hotspot/voice needs before buying.
