Staying in United States

Hotel travel in the United States is highly regional: large gateway cities, convention and airport districts, national-park approaches, coastal resorts and road-trip stopovers all matter. Visitors often build itineraries around the Census Bureau’s broad Northeast, Midwest, South and West regions, then base in major city and airport markets such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Seattle and other large hubs. Entry depends on the official U.S. visa or Visa Waiver Program framework; once inside the country, long distances make domestic flights central, while Amtrak corridors and the Interstate Highway System are useful for selected rail trips and self-drive routes. For hotel loyalty, the broadest practical starting points are Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors and IHG One Rewards, with Hyatt also relevant in many major city and resort markets.

Entry & getting around

Where to base

Think regionally first: Northeast, South, Midwest and West. Big city and airport markets such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami and Seattle work well as bases for urban stays, flights and regional side trips.

Entry & getting around

The State Department describes the Visa Waiver Program as allowing eligible nationals to travel for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less with valid ESTA approval; others generally use the appropriate visitor-visa route. Domestically, air is the main long-distance mode, while Amtrak and the Interstate system support rail corridors and road trips.

Main gateways

DOT/BTS major-airport data includes hubs such as Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, New York JFK, Newark, San Francisco and Seattle; multi-city trips often connect through these large airport markets.

Loyalty landscape

Points-focused travelers should start with Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors and IHG One Rewards, each of which publishes U.S. hotel search pages with multi-brand coverage across city, airport, suburban and road-trip markets. Hyatt is also worth checking in major cities and resort areas.

Trip preparation

Health

Most visitors can drink tap water in regulated systems, but follow local boil-water advisories after storms or in remote areas. Use normal food-safety precautions. Mosquitoes can transmit West Nile seasonally in the contiguous U.S.; dengue risk is limited in some states and higher in Puerto Rico/U.S. Virgin Islands. Use repellent, watch for ticks, plan for extreme heat, and ascend gradually in high-elevation areas such as the Rockies.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic 4-6 weeks before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines such as MMR, Tdap, polio, varicella, influenza and COVID-19; other vaccines depend on age, health, itinerary and activities. The United States does not require a yellow-fever vaccination certificate for entry.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is widely supported in the U.S. by major networks including AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, plus many prepaid/MVNO and travel-eSIM providers. Bring an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone and install before arrival if possible. Coverage is strong in cities and highways but can be weak in national parks, mountains and remote desert areas.
