Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island is a premier resort destination in South Carolina's Lowcountry, renowned for its eco-friendly development and lush tree cover. Located on a barrier island 20 miles northeast of Savannah, it features 12 miles of Atlantic beachfront. While approximately 70% of the island, including most tourist areas, is situated within gated communities, the town maintains several public beach access points. With a year-round population of nearly 38,000 that swells to 150,000 in summer, the island offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural opportunities, and world-class golf. For hotel travelers, the island provides a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere, ideal for those seeking a balance of relaxation and activity in a well-preserved coastal environment.

Getting there & around

From the airport

Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH) is on the island; taxi, rideshare or rental car are the practical choices, about 10-25 minutes to most visitor areas depending on resort gate and traffic. Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV) has many more flights; rent a car, use rideshare/taxi, or pre-book a shuttle/car service. Expect about 50-75 minutes to Coligny/Forest Beach or Shelter Cove, longer in peak beach traffic. There is no train or metro to Hilton Head Island.

Around the city

Hilton Head is spread out and has no metro. A rental car is easiest for resort-hopping, groceries and golf, but bikes are very useful on the island’s extensive paths and many visitors ride between beach, dining and resorts. The Breeze Trolley Route 505 is the main tourist transit option: in 2026 it runs seasonally April 11-Sept 7, fare-free, linking Shelter Cove, Coligny, mid-island and the Westin/Port Royal area. Use Track The Breeze for live locations; outside trolley season, plan on car, bike, taxi or rideshare.

As of 2026-06-20 — confirm current schedules/fares with the operator.

Loyalty program coverage

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

Most tourist areas are within gated communities, so hotels are often concentrated along the beachfront or near the harbor. Staying within these communities offers privacy and amenities, while public beach access points allow easy entry to the Atlantic. Consider your preference for resort-style convenience versus direct beach proximity when selecting your base.

Getting Around

The island's road network is designed to minimize environmental impact, often featuring lower speed limits. Due to the prevalence of gated communities and spread-out attractions, renting a car or using bicycles is the most efficient way to navigate between beaches, golf courses, and cultural venues like the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina.

Best Season

Summer sees the highest visitor numbers, with a population swelling to 150,000, offering vibrant energy but also crowds. Spring and autumn provide milder weather, ideal for golfing at the RBC Heritage venue and enjoying outdoor festivals. These seasons offer a more relaxed pace for travelers seeking comfort and accessibility without peak-season congestion.

Cultural Footprint

Beyond beaches, the island offers rich cultural experiences rooted in Gullah heritage. Hotels provide easy access to the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, and annual events like the outdoor wine tasting. Golf enthusiasts can also watch the RBC Heritage PGA Tour tournament, adding a layer of sporting culture to the stay.
