Staying in Greece

Greece works best as a hotel itinerary that pairs an urban gateway with one or more regional bases. Athens anchors antiquities, dining, international air service and ferry access from nearby Piraeus; Thessaloniki is the practical base for northern Greece and Halkidiki; Crete, the Cyclades, Rhodes and the Dodecanese, and the Ionian Islands around Corfu are the main resort-and-island hotel zones. Short leisure entry follows Schengen rules: visa-exempt nationalities may generally stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period, while other travelers need a Schengen visa. Getting around is usually multimodal, with Athens as the main air hub, additional international airports at major islands and Thessaloniki, ferries from Piraeus and other ports, KTEL intercity buses, and Hellenic Train on core rail corridors. For loyalty travelers, the strongest global-program footprint to check first is usually Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, IHG One Rewards and ALL - Accor Live Limitless, with Hyatt more selective and many independent Greek resort groups outside the major points ecosystems.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

Greece sits inside the Schengen travel framework, with short stays generally capped at 90 days in any 180-day period for visa-exempt travelers. Athens is the main international gateway, while Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Rhodes, Corfu, Chania, Santorini and Mykonos support regional and island itineraries; ferries remain central for the islands and routes from Piraeus toward the Saronic Islands, Cyclades, Crete, North Aegean and Dodecanese.

Where To Base

First-time trips usually start in Athens, while Thessaloniki works for northern Greece and Halkidiki. Resort-focused hotel stays cluster around Crete, the Cyclades such as Santorini and Mykonos, Rhodes and the Dodecanese, Corfu and the Ionian Islands, plus selected Peloponnese coastal destinations.

Loyalty Landscape

Global hotel loyalty coverage is uneven: Athens and the best-known resort islands or coastal destinations offer the most recognizable options. Start with Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, IHG One Rewards and ALL - Accor Live Limitless; Hyatt is more selective in Greece, and many Greek resort operators sit outside the large points ecosystems.

Trip preparation

Health

Reference info, not medical advice. Greece has high summer heat/UV; plan shade, water, sunscreen and lighter activity at midday. Use normal food-and-water caution; tap water is generally treated in cities, but on small islands or remote stays ask locally or use sealed water. CDC flags bug-bite risks including ticks, sand flies and mosquitoes; West Nile occurs seasonally, so use repellent and cover up outdoors. Hikers should prepare for mountain weather and altitude on peaks such as Olympus; avoid floodwater/freshwater exposure after storms.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. CDC says to be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, polio, influenza, varicella and shingles as applicable, plus COVID-19. Hepatitis A is considered for most travelers, especially rural/smaller-city or street-food plans; hepatitis B is recommended for unvaccinated travelers under 60 and may be considered at 60+. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine depends on animal-contact activities and access to care. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and Greece does not require a yellow-fever certificate.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is widely usable in Greece if your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible. The main local mobile networks are Cosmote, Vodafone Greece and Nova; carrier stores and online support offer eSIM activation for eligible prepaid/postpaid lines. Travelers can also use Greece or Europe regional data-only travel eSIMs that roam on local networks. Expect strong urban/island-resort coverage, with weaker signal possible on remote beaches, ferries and mountains.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-06-20).
