Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city, serves as a vital transportation hub in Southeastern Europe and a cultural beacon on the Thermaic Gulf. Historically known as the 'co-capital' of the Byzantine Empire, it offers a unique blend of Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments, Roman ruins, and Ottoman-era structures. For frequent-flyer hotel travelers, the city provides a rich backdrop of history and vibrant modern life, anchored by the Aristotle University and a thriving festival scene. Its strategic location makes it an essential stop for those exploring Northern Greece, with a diverse architectural heritage that includes UNESCO World Heritage sites. The city's multi-ethnic past is reflected in its coexisting churches, mosques, and synagogues, creating a distinct atmosphere that appeals to culturally curious guests. As a major economic center, it offers robust infrastructure and connectivity, making it convenient for both business and leisure stays.

Getting there & around

From the airport

Thessaloniki Airport Makedonia (SKG) is the main airport, about 13 km southeast of the city. There is no direct airport metro or train. Bus 01X runs between the airport, city centre stops, New Railway Station and KTEL; 01N covers the night service. Allow roughly 40-60 minutes by bus depending on traffic. Taxis wait outside arrivals 24 hours and usually take about 25-40 minutes to the centre.

Around the city

For most visitors, stay central and walk for the waterfront, markets and main sights. Metro Line 1 runs New Railway Station-Nea Elvetia via Dimokratias, Venizelou, Agias Sofias and other central stops, generally 05:15-23:00. Buses fill gaps, including airport and suburban routes. Short-stay tourists can use ThessTicket single/day products from metro machines or bus sales points; regular users need ThessCard for longer passes. Validate metro tickets on entry and exit, and check OASTH/OSETH telematics before longer bus trips.
