Hersonissos

Hersonissos, located on the northern coast of Crete, serves as a strategic hub approximately 25 kilometers east of Heraklion. While often referred to by the name of its peninsula and harbor, the broader area includes the administrative seat of Gournes. For frequent-flyer hotel travelers, this location offers exceptional connectivity, being just 25 km from Heraklion International Airport and 27 km from the main port. It acts as an ideal base for exploring both the western reaches toward Heraklion and the eastern attractions near Agios Nikolaos. The region combines accessibility with the charm of a traditional Cretan coastal setting, making it suitable for business transit stops or leisurely extended stays.

Getting there & around

From the airport

Main airport is Heraklion (HER), about 25 km from Hersonissos. There is no train or metro. KTEL Heraklion-Lasithi buses run frequently from Heraklion toward Hersonissos/Malia; from Heraklion bus station to Hersonissos is about 40 minutes, and the airport stop usually makes it a little shorter. Taxi or pre-booked transfer is typically 20-30 minutes in normal traffic. Chania airport is a secondary option only: allow roughly 2.5-3 hours by car, longer by bus via Chania and Heraklion.

Around the city

Hersonissos has no metro and no tourist transit card worth buying. Use KTEL buses for the north-coast corridor: Heraklion, Gouves/Cretaquarium, Hersonissos, Stalida, Malia and Agios Nikolaos are all on posted routes. Buy point-to-point tickets online, in the KTEL app/stations, or locally where available. The port area is walkable, but hillside villages and resort strips are easier by taxi or rental car, especially at night.

Loyalty program coverage

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

The local government seat is in the village of Gournes, which hosts a concentration of accommodations. Staying here provides a balance between resort-style relaxation and logistical convenience. It is well-positioned for accessing both the urban amenities of Heraklion to the west and the scenic eastern coastline.

Airport Connection

With the Heraklion International Airport located just 25 kilometers away, transit times are minimal. This proximity is particularly advantageous for travelers with early morning flights or those using the island as a stopover, offering a quick and efficient connection compared to staying further south or east.

Best Season

Situated on the Mediterranean/Aegean Sea border, the peninsula benefits from a mild climate. Summer months offer ideal conditions for coastal activities. As a key transit point between Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos, it remains accessible year-round, though peak season provides the most vibrant atmosphere for hotel guests seeking a central Cretan experience.
