Staying in United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federal semi-constitutional monarchy in West Asia, comprising seven emirates with Abu Dhabi as the capital. Dubai serves as the nation's largest city and a global hub for finance, tourism, and commerce. While Arabic is the official language, English is the most widely spoken and the primary language of business. The UAE boasts a highly diversified economy, having reduced reliance on oil in favor of tourism and services. With a population exceeding 11 million, the vast majority are expatriates, creating a cosmopolitan environment. The country offers seamless connectivity via major international gateways and modern infrastructure, making it a premier destination for frequent-flyer hotel travelers seeking luxury, efficiency, and global loyalty program integration.

Entry & getting around

Regional Structure & Accommodation Layout

Hotel travel in the UAE is primarily city-based, centered around its seven emirates. Abu Dhabi, the capital, offers high-end cultural experiences and luxury resorts, while Dubai serves as the global hub for business and leisure, featuring dense urban hotel clusters and iconic landmark properties. Other emirates like Sharjah and Ajman provide quieter coastal or traditional experiences. Travelers should base themselves according to itinerary priorities—business, shopping, or culture—with efficient transport connecting Dubai and Abu Dhabi for multi-city itineraries.

Entry & Getting Around

Visa requirements vary by nationality, with many eligible for visa-on-arrival or e-visas. Always check the latest regulations with the nearest UAE consulate before traveling. Domestic transport relies heavily on air and road networks. Both Dubai and Abu Dhabi have major international airports. Inter-emirate highways are well-developed, making car rental or private transfers ideal for exploring different regions. Public transport, including metro and bus systems, is expanding in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, offering convenient intra-city mobility.

Loyalty Landscape

The UAE is a key market for major hotel loyalty programs. Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, IHG One Rewards, World of Hyatt, and Accor Live Limitless (ALL) have a strong and extensive footprint across the country, covering luxury to select-service segments. As a global hub, these programs typically offer abundant redemption options and premium stays. Local brands like Jumeirah Group also operate unique loyalty schemes, often partnering with international programs to enhance value for frequent travelers.

Trip preparation

Health

Reference only, not medical advice. UAE visitor risks are mainly heat, sun, dehydration, road/water safety, and food or stomach upset. Drink treated or bottled water if unsure, use safe-food habits, and plan outdoor time around extreme summer heat. Mosquito/tick-borne risks are lower than in many tropical destinations but still use repellent outdoors; avoid camel contact if concerned about MERS exposure. No high-altitude issue for typical city/coast trips.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic before travel. CDC advises being up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, polio, flu, Tdap, varicella/shingles as appropriate, plus COVID-19. Hepatitis A is recommended for unvaccinated travelers; hepatitis B and typhoid are commonly considered based on age, itinerary, food exposure, and activities. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine may be considered for animal-contact or remote plans. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended for UAE itself, but a certificate is required for travelers aged 9 months+ arriving from, or transiting over 12 hours in, a yellow-fever-risk country.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is widely supported in the UAE if your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible. Main local options include e&/Etisalat Visitor Line, du Tourist SIM, and Virgin Mobile UAE tourist eSIM/SIM plans. Tourist SIMs/eSIMs are commonly sold online, through carrier apps, and at major arrival airports such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah; passport or GCC ID verification may be required.
