Staying in Maldives

The Maldives, officially the Republic of Maldives, is an archipelagic nation in South Asia located in the Indian Ocean. It is the smallest country in Asia by land area (298 sq km) but spans roughly 90,000 sq km of sea across 26 atolls. Notably, it is the world's lowest-lying country, with an average elevation of just 1.5 meters and a highest natural point of only 2.4 meters. The capital, Malé, is the most populous city and historically served as the seat of royal dynasties. The nation has been inhabited for over 2,500 years, with Islam arriving in the 12th century and British protectorate status ending in 1965. For hotel travelers, the Maldives presents a unique landscape: accommodation is almost exclusively resort-based on private islands, distinct from the urban-centric models found elsewhere. This dispersion requires careful planning regarding domestic transport and entry requirements.

Accommodation Model: Resort vs. Urban Isolation

The Maldives features a highly specialized accommodation structure where the vast majority of tourists stay in resorts located on private islands, rather than in concentrated urban centers. This 'one island, one resort' model offers extreme privacy but results in significant geographical dispersion. While Malé serves as the administrative and commercial hub, it is not the primary leisure destination. Travelers must adapt to this layout, as bookings are typically tied to specific atolls and islands rather than a single city.

Transport Gateways and Domestic Connections

International travel primarily enters through Malé International Airport. Due to the wide distribution of islands, domestic transport from the airport to resorts is critical. Common transfer methods include speedboats, seaplanes, or domestic flights, depending on the distance of the resort's atoll. This multimodal domestic transport network is a key component of the Maldivian travel experience, requiring travelers to arrange transfers in advance based on their chosen island.

Entry and Visa Requirements

The Maldives offers visa-on-arrival facilities for tourists from most countries, allowing for stay permits upon arrival. However, specific visa-free or visa-on-arrival policies vary by nationality, and passports generally require validity of at least six months. Given the potential for changes in international travel regulations, it is strongly advised to check with the official Maldivian consulate or embassy for the latest requirements before traveling.

Hotel Loyalty Landscape

The Maldivian hotel market is dominated by international luxury resort brands, many of which are affiliated with global groups such as Marriott, Hilton, or IHG. Consequently, these global loyalty programs have a significant footprint in the region. However, since many properties operate independently or belong to specific boutique groups, the applicability of traditional chain hotel points accumulation and redemption systems should be verified against the specific brand affiliation of each resort.

Trip preparation

Health

Reference only, not medical advice. Maldives trips are sea-level, hot, humid and high-UV: plan hydration, sun protection, reef-safe swimming/boating habits and heat breaks. Use safe food/water practices, especially off-resort. Mosquito-borne dengue, Zika and chikungunya are risks; use repellent and screened/air-conditioned rooms. Malaria prevention medication is not generally listed for Maldives travelers by CDC.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. CDC advises being current on routine vaccines, including MMR, polio, flu, chickenpox, Tdap and shingles where age-appropriate, plus COVID-19. Hepatitis A is recommended for unvaccinated travelers; hepatitis B for unvaccinated travelers of all ages; typhoid for most travelers. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine depends on animal/contact risk and access to care. Yellow-fever vaccine is not recommended for Maldives itself, but proof is required for travelers aged 9 months or older arriving from, or transiting over 12 hours through, yellow-fever-risk countries; not required for direct travel from the U.S.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM and mobile data are practical for visitors. Dhiraagu publishes eSIM support and a Tourist SIM, while Ooredoo Maldives is the other major mobile carrier and offers prepaid/tourist connectivity options. Coverage is generally good on resort and inhabited islands, with 4G common and 5G in some populated areas, but remote sandbanks/boat transfers can be patchy. Confirm your handset is unlocked and eSIM-compatible before arrival; airport and carrier channels are the safest setup points.
