Staying in Finland

Finland, a Nordic nation in Northern Europe, is renowned for its pristine nature, design heritage, and efficient infrastructure. Bordered by Sweden, Norway, and Russia, with coastlines on the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland, the country offers diverse travel experiences. The capital, Helsinki, serves as the primary hub with a robust selection of city hotels, while the northern Lapland region is famous for aurora viewing and winter resorts. Finland has a population of approximately 5.7 million, with Finnish and Swedish as official languages. Historically settled after the last Ice Age, it gained independence in 1917 and joined the EU in 1995 and NATO in 2023. The country consistently ranks high in global indices for happiness, education, and economic competitiveness. Travelers benefit from seamless domestic transport and a strong presence of international hotel brands, making it an ideal destination for both business and leisure.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

Finland is a member of the Schengen Area; entry requires a valid passport or visa (always check the consulate for current regulations). Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is the main international gateway, offering extensive connections across Europe and globally. Domestic transport is highly efficient, with well-developed rail and road networks connecting southern cities to the northern Lapland region.

Accommodation Layout: City vs. Resort

Accommodation in Finland varies significantly by region. Southern cities like Helsinki, Tampere, and Turku offer a concentration of business and boutique hotels ideal for urban exploration. In contrast, the northern Lapland region is famous for unique glass igloos, snow hotels, and resorts designed for aurora viewing and winter activities. With over 180,000 lakes, lakeside resorts also provide a distinct accommodation experience.

Hotel Loyalty Landscape

Major international hotel groups (such as Marriott, Hilton, IHG, and Accor) have a strong footprint in Finland, particularly in Helsinki and key tourist destinations, with mature loyalty program redemption networks. While local brands exist, international chains dominate the market, ensuring consistent membership benefits and service standards for frequent flyers.

Trip preparation

Health

Finland has high food and water standards; tap water is generally safe. Main practical risks are summer mosquitoes and ticks in forests/lakeside areas, including tick-borne encephalitis in some areas; use repellent and tick checks. No altitude issue. Pack for rapid weather changes, cold/ice in winter, sun/heat on long summer days, and water safety around lakes/saunas.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. CDC advises being up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, polio, flu, varicella and shingles where relevant, plus COVID-19. Hepatitis A may be considered for many travelers; hepatitis B is recommended for unvaccinated travelers. Tick-borne encephalitis vaccine may be recommended or considered for outdoor exposure in endemic areas. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is usually only for higher-risk animal exposure. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and no yellow-fever certificate is required for Finland.

eSIM / connectivity

Connectivity is strong in cities and most travel corridors, with 4G/5G networks run by Elisa, DNA and Telia. eSIM is widely usable on compatible phones; Telia offers prepaid eSIM, while local prepaid SIM/data options are available from major carriers and retailers. Coverage can thin in remote Lapland or wilderness areas, so download maps and check carrier coverage before hiking.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-06-20).
