Porvoo

Porvoo is a historic city on Finland's southern coast, located just 35 kilometers east of Helsinki. As one of Finland's six medieval towns, it offers a unique blend of history and accessibility. The city is bilingual, with Finnish and Swedish as official languages, reflecting its rich cultural heritage. The focal point for visitors is the Old Town (Vanha Porvoo), featuring well-preserved 18th- and 19th-century wooden buildings and the 15th-century Porvoo Cathedral. Together with the Porvoonjoki River Valley, the area is recognized as a National Landscape of Finland. In December 2025, it was voted the 'most beautiful Christmas town in Finland.' For hotel travelers, Porvoo provides a charming, walkable base close to the capital but distinct in atmosphere. With a population of around 52,000, it maintains a relaxed, small-town feel while offering essential amenities. Its proximity to Helsinki makes it an ideal stopover or extended stay destination for those seeking architectural beauty and historical depth without the bustle of a major metropolis.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

For the best experience, choose accommodations within the Old Town (Vanha Porvoo). This allows easy walking access to the iconic red wooden houses, the cathedral, and riverside cafes. Staying here immerses you in the historic atmosphere. Alternatively, hotels near the city center or along the river offer modern amenities while keeping the historic core within a short distance. Given the city's compact size, most key attractions are accessible on foot from central locations.

Getting Around & Arrival

Porvoo does not have its own airport. The nearest major hub is Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. From Helsinki city center, regular train or bus services connect to Porvoo in approximately 30-40 minutes. Once in Porvoo, the city is highly walkable. The Old Town and main sights are clustered closely together, making walking the most efficient and enjoyable way to explore. Taxis are available but often unnecessary for tourists staying centrally.

Best Season

Porvoo is visitable year-round, but winter offers a unique charm. It was voted the 'most beautiful Christmas town in Finland' in late 2025, making the holiday season particularly magical with festive decorations and cozy atmospheres. Summer provides pleasant weather for strolling along the Porvoonjoki River and exploring the open-air historic sites. Spring and autumn offer fewer crowds and a serene environment, ideal for travelers seeking tranquility and photography opportunities amidst the changing foliage and historic architecture.

In the city’s picturesque Old Town, you’ll find this 1920s former chocolate factory whose historic exterior is in contrast to the sleek and stylish restaurant within. Dried flowers on the walls impart a ‘back to nature’ feel that’s a perfect match for the menu, whose heart is firmly settled in Porvoo. Local, seasonal local ingredients feature in immaculately presented dishes which are detailed, complex and composed of subtle, beautifully judged flavours. These could include the likes of pike-perch mousseline with peas and spinach or mallard breast with kale, apple and lemon thyme.

Chef Pasha Demin may be Russian, but he adores Finland: the people, the way of life and the food – and Helsinki’s Design District is the perfect setting for his restaurant’s forward-thinking philosophy. Rooted in the seasons and the landscape, Boreal’s aim is to encourage guests to connect with the planet. Following the rhythms of nature – and with a variety of preservation techniques in evidence to prolong the seasons – the original cooking showcases ingredients that are foraged from the wild or sourced from regenerative farms. Understated names such as ‘Charcoal Foam’ betray the complexity a

Friendly service, sensible prices and plenty of buzz in the air – this is the kind of neighbourhood spot we’d all love to have at the end of our street. It’s located in the north of the city, inside a substantial three-storey building dating back to the 19th Century. The unfussy dishes are a great example of Nordic bistronomy: rustic, satisfying and filled with bold, balanced flavours – whether that be fresh herbs adding vibrancy to a burbot dish, or tart lingonberries cutting through the sweetness of meringue.
