Staying in Costa Rica

Costa Rica (CR) stands out in Central America as a premier destination for eco-tourism and luxury travel, distinguished by its stable democracy, abolition of the standing military, and high Human Development Index. While San José serves as the political and economic hub, the tourism infrastructure is strategically distributed across the Pacific coast’s beach resorts and the Caribbean side’s eco-lodges. The country boasts a robust aviation network, acting as a key connector in the region. For frequent flyer hotel travelers, Costa Rica offers a diverse landscape ranging from high-end all-inclusive properties to boutique ecological retreats, catering to those seeking a seamless blend of natural immersion and premium hospitality standards.

Entry & getting around

Regional Structure & Hotel Types

Costa Rica's accommodation landscape is distinctly regional. The Pacific coast (e.g., Guanacaste, Nicoya Peninsula, Osa Peninsula) is dominated by large all-inclusive resorts and beach hotels, ideal for travelers seeking convenience and luxury. The Caribbean coast (e.g., Puntarenas, Tortuguero) focuses on eco-lodges and boutique stays that emphasize nature immersion. Inland mountainous areas (e.g., Alajuela, Cerro Chirripó) feature coffee plantation hotels and spa retreats. This structure necessitates choosing a strategic 'base' based on itinerary priorities rather than relying on a single city-hopping model.

Gateways & Domestic Transport

International travel primarily funnels through Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José, the country's main aviation hub. Limón (LIO) and Puntarenas (LIR) offer limited international services. Domestic connectivity relies heavily on air and road networks. Domestic flights link San José with key towns like Limón and Puntarenas, saving time for urgent itineraries. However, due to complex terrain, renting a car or using private bus services is often necessary to reach remote eco-destinations. Travelers should plan ground transport carefully, as road conditions in some regions can impact efficiency.

Entry & Visa Overview

Costa Rica offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry for citizens of many countries, depending on nationality and purpose of visit. As a member of the Central American Integration System, its entry policies are generally accessible. Travelers must ensure their passport validity meets entry requirements and may need to provide proof of onward travel and sufficient funds. Since regulations can change, it is strongly recommended to check the official website of the Costa Rican consulate or relevant embassy for the latest entry rules before planning your trip.

Hotel Loyalty Landscape

In Costa Rica, major international hotel loyalty programs have a strong footprint, particularly in San José and key tourist zones. Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and IHG One Rewards maintain significant portfolios spanning luxury resorts to business hotels. World of Hyatt has been expanding its network of boutique and eco-friendly properties. While local chains like Gran Hotel Costa Rica hold cultural significance, international programs dominate in terms of points redemption flexibility and elite benefits, offering frequent flyers substantial value and consistency across the country's diverse accommodation types.

Trip preparation

Health

Tap water is generally drinkable in Costa Rica, with bottled/treated water prudent in some rural areas or on hikes. Use normal food-safety judgment. Mosquito-borne risks include dengue, Zika, chikungunya and malaria in parts of Alajuela and Limón; use repellent, long sleeves and screened/AC rooms. Heat, strong sun, rip currents, heavy rain/mud and high-elevation volcano or mountain hikes can be bigger day-to-day risks than illness.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, polio, flu, varicella and COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A for unvaccinated travelers, hepatitis B for many travelers, and typhoid for most travelers, especially rural/smaller-city stays. Rabies and malaria prevention are itinerary-risk discussions. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended for Costa Rica itself, but a certificate is required for travelers arriving from specified yellow-fever-risk countries.

eSIM / connectivity

Connectivity is generally good in cities and tourist corridors, thinner in remote parks, mountains and coasts. Main local mobile brands are kölbi, Claro and Liberty; the tourism board notes prepaid SIMs at the airport/phone stores, and Claro advertises eSIM for prepaid and postpaid in Costa Rica. eSIM is usable but confirm your phone is unlocked/compatible; a local SIM or travel eSIM may be simpler depending on arrival point.
