Common questions

Does a Chinese ordinary passport holder with a valid U.S. visa still need a Costa Rican visa for tourism or business?

Usually no, provided the U.S. visa allows multiple entries and is valid for at least 90 calendar days from the intended Costa Rica entry date; U.S. C1, C2 and C3 transit visas are not accepted.

Is a Chinese ordinary passport visa-free for a short tourist visit to Costa Rica with no other visa or residence document?

No. The official list places the People’s Republic of China in the third group, which requires a consular visa.

Is a bare HKSAR passport visa-free for Costa Rica?

I found no official text listing a bare HKSAR passport as visa-free. The official text only exempts Hong Kong and Macao nationals holding valid British or Portuguese passports for up to 90 days; those not holding such a travel document require a consular visa under the China provisions.

Yes. The official list places Taiwan in the second visa-free group.

Do U.S., UK, Japanese or Singapore passports need a visa for a short tourist visit to Costa Rica?

No. The official list places the United States, United Kingdom, Japan and Singapore in the first visa-free group; the amendment published on 31 August 2023 set the first-group maximum stay at 180 calendar days.
