Staying in Switzerland

Switzerland, officially the Swiss Confederation, is a landlocked country at the intersection of Central, Western, and Southern Europe. Geographically defined by the Swiss Alps, the Swiss Plateau, and the Jura Mountains, it is home to approximately 9 million people, mostly concentrated on the plateau where major economic centers like Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern, Lausanne, Winterthur, and Lucerne are located. As a federal republic of 26 cantons, Switzerland features four principal linguistic and cultural regions: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. Bern serves as the federal city and seat of government. Swiss national identity is cohesive, rooted in shared history, values like federalism and direct democracy, and Alpine symbolism, transcending language and ethnicity. Historically originating from the Old Swiss Confederacy in the Late Middle Ages, with the Federal Charter of 1291 as its founding document, the nation evolved through various political changes, including the establishment of its current federal system in 1848.

Entry & Getting Around

Switzerland borders Germany, France, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Italy. Key international gateways include Zurich, Geneva, and Basel airports. Domestic transport is renowned for its efficient rail network connecting major cities and alpine regions. For entry and visa requirements, always check the official consulate website before traveling.

Where to Base: Cities vs. Regions

Switzerland's hotel landscape is distinctly divided between urban centers and alpine regions. Cities on the plateau such as Zurich, Geneva, Basel, and Bern serve as hubs for business and urban tourism, offering a wide range of upscale and boutique accommodations. The Swiss Alps feature numerous resort hotels ideal for skiing and mountain leisure. Cities like Lucerne and Lausanne offer a blend of culture and scenery, making them excellent bases for travelers.

Loyalty Landscape

Switzerland has a strong footprint for major international hotel loyalty programs. Global chains such as Marriott, Hilton, IHG, and Huazhu maintain extensive networks covering everything from urban business stays to alpine resorts. Due to the market's high internationalization, members of major global loyalty programs can expect good redemption value and consistent quality across the country.

Trip preparation

Health

Switzerland has high food and water standards; tap water is generally drinkable, but treat mountain stream/lake water when hiking. Main visitor risks are outdoor-related: ticks in wooded/grass areas, sun/UV and heat in summer, rapid weather changes, cold exposure, and altitude effects in the Alps. No malaria risk; use normal bite prevention outdoors.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic before departure. CDC advises being up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, flu, polio, varicella, Tdap, shingles as applicable, plus COVID-19. Hepatitis A may be considered for many travelers; hepatitis B is recommended for unvaccinated travelers under 60 and may be considered for older travelers. Tick-borne encephalitis vaccine may be relevant for extensive outdoor/tick exposure; rabies pre-exposure is only for higher-risk animal exposure or limited access to care. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and no yellow-fever certificate is required for entry.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is widely supported on modern phones in Switzerland. The main local mobile networks are Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt. Swisscom supports eSIM for subscriptions and prepaid; Sunrise states all mobile subscriptions and prepaid products are available with eSIM. Travelers can also use local prepaid data options or travel eSIM providers; verify device compatibility and ID/registration requirements before arrival.
