Staying in Austria

Austria, a landlocked nation in Central Europe nestled in the Eastern Alps, is a federation of nine states. Its capital, Vienna, is the most populous city and serves as the historical heart of the Habsburg monarchy and the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. The country boasts a rich cultural heritage, evident in its imperial architecture, classical music traditions, and alpine landscapes. For frequent-flyer hotel travelers, Austria offers a diverse range of accommodations, from luxury urban hotels in Vienna and Salzburg to resort-style properties in alpine regions like Tyrol and Carinthia. The country is well-connected via major international gateways, including Vienna International Airport, and has efficient domestic transport links. While specific hotel counts vary, major global loyalty programs have a significant presence in key cities and tourist destinations, catering to both business and leisure needs. Travelers should verify entry requirements and visa policies with official consular sources.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

Austria is part of the Schengen Area; always check with the local consulate for current visa and entry regulations. The primary international gateway is Vienna International Airport (VIE), with additional international access via Salzburg (SZG) and Innsbruck (INN). Domestic transport is highly efficient, dominated by the ÖBB rail network connecting federal states and tourist hubs. The road network is excellent for exploring the Alpine regions.

Where to Base

Base your stay in major cities for regional exploration. Vienna is ideal for business and culture, offering a high concentration of premium hotels. Salzburg, known for its festival and Mozart heritage, has many historic properties in the old town. Innsbruck and Graz serve as excellent bases for accessing the Alps and southern lakes. The hotel landscape is city-centric, with resorts concentrated in specific alpine or lakeside areas.

Loyalty Landscape

Major international hotel groups (e.g., Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Accor) have a strong footprint in Austria's primary cities and key tourist destinations. Vienna, as the capital, offers the widest brand coverage. Salzburg and Innsbruck also host numerous international chain properties. There is a significant presence of local boutique and historic hotels, some of which may not participate in global loyalty programs. Verify brand affiliation and points eligibility before booking.

Trip preparation

Health

Austria has high food and water standards; tap water is generally potable. For outdoor trips, plan for Alpine weather, strong UV at altitude, cold exposure in winter, and heat in summer cities. Ticks can transmit TBE/Lyme in wooded or grassy areas; use repellent and do tick checks. Mosquito-borne disease risk is low but avoid bites.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. Be current on routine vaccines including MMR, tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, polio, influenza, varicella, shingles as applicable, plus COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis B for unvaccinated travelers; rabies pre-exposure is only for higher-risk animal exposure. TBE vaccine is recommended/considered for extensive outdoor exposure in endemic tick areas. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended or required for Austria.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is widely usable on compatible phones. Austria’s main mobile networks are A1, Magenta Telekom, and Drei; all have broad 4G/5G coverage and prepaid data/SIM products, though eSIM availability can depend on plan and sales channel. Tourist-friendly options include prepaid “Wertkarte” starter packs from local carriers and international travel eSIMs that roam on Austrian networks; registration/ID checks may apply for local prepaid SIMs.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-06-20).
