Getting there & around

From the airport

Vienna International Airport (VIE) is the main airport. Best all-round option: S7 S-Bahn to Wien Mitte/Landstrasse in about 20-22 min, continuing to Praterstern in just under 30 min; buy/validate the airport boundary plus Vienna core-zone ticket if needed. Fastest airport-dedicated rail: CAT nonstop to Wien Mitte in 16 min. Railjet/InterCity reaches Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 min, useful for Wieden or onward trains. Vienna Airport Bus Line 2 reaches Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz in about 20-22 min; Line 1 reaches Hauptbahnhof/Westbahnhof in about 40 min. Taxi or ride-hail is usually about 20-30 min to the centre, traffic dependent.

Around the city

Vienna is easy by U-Bahn, tram, bus and S-Bahn. The U-Bahn has five lines: U1, U2, U3, U4 and U6; there is no operating U5 yet. For most visitors, get a 24-hour ticket for a short stay, a flexible 7-day Vienna ticket for longer stays, or the Vienna City Card if you will use public transport plus tourist discounts. Tickets cover the Vienna core zone, not standard airport transfers, CAT or airport bus. Validate paper tickets before travel; stand right on escalators and walk left.

In Konstantin Filippou's elaborate tasting menu, the spotlight is firmly on fish and seafood, with meat largely absent or relegated to a supporting role.
