City Centre / Serdika-Sredets
Historic core, sights, metro, busy streets

Sofia, the capital and largest city of Bulgaria, sits in the Sofia Valley at the foot of Mount Vitosha. With a history dating back to 7000 BC, it evolved from the ancient Serdica to a major Ottoman center before becoming the capital of modern Bulgaria in 1879. Known as the 'triangle of religious tolerance,' it uniquely hosts Christian, Islamic, and Jewish sites in close proximity. As the 14th-largest city in the EU and the third highest European capital, Sofia offers a blend of ancient ruins, communist-era architecture, and vibrant cultural institutions like the National Opera and the Museum of Socialist Art. Its humid continental climate and mountain surroundings make it a distinct destination for travelers seeking history and natural beauty.

Sofia has one main airport: Vasil Levski Sofia Airport (SOF). The easiest arrival is metro M4 from Terminal 2 to Serdika in the centre, about 20 minutes; from Terminal 1 use the free inter-terminal shuttle to Terminal 2 when operating. Bus 84 also links the terminals with central Sofia, roughly 35-45 minutes depending on traffic. There is no direct city-centre train from the terminals. For taxis, use the official airport taxi desk/rank or a reputable app; the centre is usually about 20-30 minutes by road.

Sofia is easy to navigate by metro, tram, trolleybus and bus. For most visitors, pay-as-you-go contactless payment is the simplest: tap the same bank card or phone on each vehicle/metro gate. If you will ride often in one day, consider the Sofia public-transport day card/pass instead. Metro is best for airport, Serdika, NDK, Lozenets, Mladost and Business Park; trams and buses fill gaps in the centre. Validate every ride and keep the same card/device for inspections and daily caps.

The city center is the ideal base for hotel travelers. It places you within walking distance of the 'triangle of religious tolerance'—Sveta Nedelya Church, Banya Bashi Mosque, and Sofia Synagogue. Key cultural hubs like the National Palace of Culture and the Ivan Vazov National Theatre are also easily accessible on foot, minimizing transit time.
Sofia is built west of the Iskar river and features varied terrain due to its location at the foot of Vitosha. While the historic center is compact and walkable, public transport is efficient for longer distances. Taxis are readily available for trips to the Lyulin mountains or the Balkan Mountains to the north.
With a humid continental climate, Sofia offers distinct seasons. Summers are warm and pleasant for sightseeing, while winters bring snow, making it excellent for skiing on nearby Vitosha. Spring and autumn provide mild weather, ideal for exploring open-air sites like the Serdica Amphitheatre and the Boyana Church without extreme temperatures.
