Sofia Airport (SOF), officially Vasil Levski Sofia Airport, is Bulgaria’s main international gateway and the airport for the capital. It is important regionally, but it is not a large global connecting hub in the way Istanbul, Vienna or Frankfurt are. Bulgaria Air is based here and operates domestic, European and nearby international routes; Ryanair and Wizz Air are also major low-cost players. Bulgaria Air is not a member of Star Alliance, oneworld or SkyTeam, so alliance-driven same-airline connections are limited compared with major hubs. For frequent flyers, SOF is best understood as a compact point-to-point airport with some regional connections, a very practical metro link, and a split-terminal layout that matters if you self-connect.
