Plovdiv

Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second-largest city, sits on the banks of the Maritsa River and boasts over 6,000 years of history. As a former European Capital of Culture, it offers a unique blend of ancient Roman ruins, well-preserved Old Town architecture, and vibrant modern culture. Built across seven hills, the city is compact enough for walking but requires attention to elevation. For hotel travelers, the Old Town (Stara Plovdiv) provides the most immersive experience, while areas near the river offer easier access and modern amenities. The city serves as a key cultural hub in the Thrace region.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

For the best experience, stay in the Old Town (Stara Plovdiv) to walk to the Roman Theatre and cobblestone streets. For easier access and modern conveniences, choose hotels along the Maritsa River or near the Central Square, avoiding the steep inclines of the Seven Hills.

Getting Around

Located 144 km southeast of Sofia, Plovdiv is compact. The Old Town is best explored on foot, but be prepared for steep hills. Taxis are available for short hops between the riverfront and hilltop attractions. Public transport connects the broader metropolitan area effectively.

Best Season

Spring and autumn offer mild weather ideal for exploring the hilly terrain. Summers can be hot, but the narrow alleys of the Old Town provide shade. As a UNESCO-recognized learning city and former European Capital of Culture, events occur year-round, but shoulder seasons provide the most comfortable conditions for sightseeing.
