Shenzhen

Shenzhen, China's third-most populous city, sits on the Pearl River estuary bordering Hong Kong. As the nation's first Special Economic Zone, it has evolved into a global powerhouse for technology, finance, and trade. With a skyline boasting the second-highest number of skyscrapers worldwide, the city offers a dynamic blend of modern innovation and rapid development. For frequent travelers, the city is best divided into key business districts: Futian serves as the financial and administrative heart, housing the Stock Exchange and numerous corporate HQs, while Nanshan is the tech hub, home to major industry leaders and vibrant cultural scenes. These areas provide excellent connectivity and a high concentration of international hotel brands, making them ideal bases for exploring the city's economic pulse.

Getting there & around

From the airport

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX) is the main airport. The easiest first-time option is Metro Line 11 from Airport station under Terminal 3/GTC to Futian in about 35-45 minutes; transfer for Luohu, Shekou or OCT. Airport buses serve several districts but are slower. Taxis or DiDi are practical with luggage, usually about 35-60 minutes to Futian depending on traffic.

Around the city

Shenzhen Metro is the backbone: extensive, bilingual, clean and useful for nearly all visitor areas, including airport, Futian, Luohu, Nanshan, Shekou and Yantian. Use a Shenzhen Tong card, the Shenzhen Tong/metro QR code, or Alipay/WeChat transit QR; single-journey tickets also work. Allow time for station security checks and avoid peak commuting hours with luggage.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

Base yourself in Futian or Nanshan districts. Futian is the financial and administrative core, offering easy access to the Stock Exchange and government offices. Nanshan is the tech hub, home to major corporate headquarters and vibrant leisure options. Both areas feature a high density of international hotel chains, ensuring consistent quality and convenience for business travelers.

Getting Around

Shenzhen boasts the world's fourth-busiest container port and a robust railway network connecting it to the rest of China. The city's metro system is efficient and covers major business districts. Its proximity to Hong Kong allows for seamless cross-border travel, making it an ideal hub for travelers managing itineraries across both regions.

Best Season

Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather for business activities and sightseeing. Summers are hot and humid, while winters remain mild. The city is accessible year-round, though travelers should monitor weather forecasts during typhoon season, which can occasionally impact transport links.

Tai Wing Wah

RestaurantBib Gourmand$$15.2 km

Dripping with vintage charm and festive vibes, this long-standing restaurant is decked out in red and gold for a joyful and luxurious feel. On the menu, Cantonese classics and dim sum brush shoulders with walled-village-style dishes, such as five-flavour chicken featuring flavoursome velvety meat. Other specialities include roast duck with bean paste and coriander, steamed mullet with salted lemon and, first and foremost, the steamed sponge cake.

Ho To Tai

RestaurantBib Gourmand$15.5 km

Traditional shops that make their own noodles from scratch are becoming scarce. Founded in 1946, this household name is among the remaining few. It is famous for its bouncy noodles that impart rich eggy flavour and, although the signature is wonton soup, zhajiang noodles and beef brisket noodle soup are also popular. Try the braised white radish with shrimp roe for the deep umami and briny-sweetness. Expect to share a table when it's busy.

Banana Boy

RestaurantBib Gourmand$15.5 km

Its à la minute banana roti has been reputed for its crispy skin and tender filling since 2019. The shop reopened in 2024 in this spot, with Nutella, Ovaltine, pork floss with mozzarella and new flavours in the menu. It's always busy, so expect to queue.

Tin Hung

RestaurantBib Gourmand$$15.6 km

Popular with locals since 2001, this shop sells its signature roast goose in specific cuts, halves or whole. Geese are shipped from Foshan daily, marinated, roasted to perfection, and served piping hot. Other standouts include honey-glazed char siu, roast duck and drunken chicken. Those looking to pair the meats with a local drink should try their herbal tea. Given the reasonable prices and limited seats, it makes sense to arrive early.

Comfort and luxury partly explain the popularity of this firm favourite with foodies, thanks to plush fabrics, beautifully dressed tables and Chinese art, but the skill and experience of the kitchen team also play a role. Their soups made with top-notch ingredients win the hearts of countless connoisseurs. Double-boiled Silkie chicken soup with dried scallop and abalone stands out with deep, complex umami. Other specialities include Peking duck and baked stuffed crab shell.
