Staying in Thailand

Thailand works well for hotel travelers who want to combine city stays, resort time and regional side trips. Bangkok is the main urban base for international arrivals, business hotels, dining and river or old-town sightseeing; Phuket, Ko Samui, Krabi, Hua Hin and Pattaya anchor beach and resort stays; Chiang Mai is the usual northern base for temples, markets and mountain-country itineraries. Entry rules depend on passport and purpose: Thai official guidance describes visa exemption, visa on arrival and e-Visa channels, with TDAC required online for non-Thai arrivals. For getting around, travelers typically combine Bangkok’s two-airport gateway, flights to resort and northern cities, rail and road links, and ferries for island sectors. The loyalty landscape is unusually strong for Southeast Asia: ALL - Accor Live Limitless has one of the broadest published country directories, Hilton Honors has a substantial Thailand directory, and major international programs cluster in Bangkok and the principal resort markets.

Entry & getting around

Entry & getting around

Official Thai guidance describes visa exemption, visa on arrival and e-Visa channels; eligible travelers may enter visa-free for a defined stay, with extensions at immigration discretion. Non-Thai arrivals must also complete TDAC online. Bangkok’s two airports handle the main gateway role, with Phuket, Chiang Mai and other airports linking resort and regional bases.

Trip character

Thailand’s hotel trips are easy to structure as a sequence: start in Bangkok, then add an island or beach resort, or head north to Chiang Mai. The accommodation mix spans business hotels, family resorts, beach properties and high-end city stays.

Trip preparation

Health

Thailand is hot and humid; pace outdoor plans, hydrate, use sun protection, and watch for heat illness. Choose safe food and drinks, wash hands, avoid floodwater/untreated freshwater, and prevent mosquito bites because dengue, Zika, chikungunya and malaria occur in some areas. Malaria risk is mainly in rural forest/fringe border provinces; most city/island trips have lower risk. Avoid animal bites and seek care promptly if bitten.

Vaccinations

Reference only: consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, polio, flu, COVID-19, Tdap/TD and varicella as applicable. CDC recommends hepatitis A and typhoid for many travelers; hepatitis B for unvaccinated travelers; Japanese encephalitis, rabies, chikungunya or malaria prevention may depend on itinerary, duration and activities. Yellow fever vaccine is not required from the US, but Thailand requires proof for travelers aged 9 months+ arriving from or transiting over 12 hours in yellow-fever-risk countries.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is widely supported for visitors with compatible unlocked phones. Major local options include AIS Tourist SIM/eSIM and True-dtac Tourist SIM/eSIM, with 4G/5G data packages sold online, in carrier shops and at major airports. SIM registration with a valid passport is required under Thai telecom rules; check device eSIM support before arrival.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-06-20).
