Where to Base
With eight villages spread across the island, location choice depends on your itinerary. Southern beaches host the majority of resorts and offer better access to water activities and dining. Northern areas are quieter and less developed, ideal for travelers seeking solitude. Given the island's 210 km² area, selecting accommodation near your primary activities minimizes transit time. Note that while elephants are present, they are not native, so wildlife encounters are managed within specific contexts.
Getting Around
Ko Chang has no airport. Travelers typically fly to Bangkok, then take ground transport to Trat Province, followed by a ferry to the island. The journey from Bangkok takes approximately 5-6 hours including transfers. On-island transportation relies on songthaews (shared trucks), motorcycle rentals, and taxis. Due to the island's large area (210 km²) and elephant-shaped geography, renting a vehicle is often the most efficient way to visit the eight villages and remote beaches comfortably.
Best Season
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from November to April, when seas are calm and weather is sunny, ideal for beach activities and exploring the island's eight villages. The southwest monsoon brings rougher seas and rain from May to October, which may affect ferry schedules and beach conditions. Frequent travelers should plan stays during the peak season for optimal comfort and accessibility, keeping in mind the island's proximity to the Cambodian border and its position on the Gulf of Thailand.
