Staying in Sweden

Sweden, the largest country in the Nordic region, sits on the Scandinavian Peninsula and is renowned for its advanced social infrastructure, innovative hospitality sector, and distinct natural landscapes. Stockholm, the capital, along with other major southern cities, serves as the primary hub for both business and leisure travel. As a member of the European Union, Sweden maintains high standards of service and connectivity, though it retains its own currency. For frequent flyers and hotel loyalists, Sweden offers a diverse portfolio ranging from historic city-center properties to modern design hotels, with strong integration into global loyalty networks.

Entry & getting around

City-Centric Accommodation Landscape

Sweden's hotel industry is heavily concentrated in urban areas, particularly in the south and center. With 88% of the population residing in cities, tourism and business activities revolve around major hubs like Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö. Unlike resort-dependent destinations, Sweden favors a city-base travel model, offering numerous historic and modern boutique hotels in urban centers.

Key Gateways and Transport

Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) is the primary international gateway, connecting to major global cities. Domestic transport is efficient, with extensive rail and road networks facilitating movement between key urban centers. Despite the large land area and low population density, inter-city travel is streamlined through public transport, ideal for frequent business travelers moving between economic hubs.

Entry and Visa Requirements

Sweden is part of the Schengen Area, allowing free movement for visa holders. Non-EU citizens should consult the official website of the Swedish Embassy or Migration Agency before traveling to verify current visa requirements and stay durations. Border controls may change due to security situations, so verification prior to departure is essential.

Hotel Loyalty Landscape

Sweden has a mature hotel market with a strong presence of major international groups such as Marriott, Hilton, IHG, and Accor. These brands offer a wide range of options from luxury to select-service, particularly in Stockholm and other key cities, providing frequent travelers with ample opportunities for points accumulation and redemption. Local chains also hold significant market share in specific segments.

Trip preparation

Health

Sweden is generally low-risk for short visits: municipal tap water and food standards are high, but use normal hygiene and treat water when hiking or camping. In summer, protect against ticks and mosquitoes in forests, meadows and archipelago areas; tick-borne encephalitis occurs in some areas. No malaria or yellow-fever risk is listed. Altitude is not a practical issue; plan for heat waves/UV in summer and cold, ice and short daylight in winter.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, flu, polio, Tdap, varicella and shingles as appropriate, plus COVID-19. CDC advises considering hepatitis A for most travelers, hepatitis B for unvaccinated travelers, and tick-borne encephalitis vaccine for extensive outdoor exposure in endemic areas. Rabies pre-exposure vaccination is only for higher-risk activities or access concerns. Yellow-fever vaccine/certificate is not required for Sweden.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is widely supported. Apple lists Swedish support from major carriers including 3, Telia, Tele2, Telenor and Comviq, with varying activation methods. Short-stay visitors should check each carrier’s prepaid/eSIM rules and any ID or in-store activation needs. If a local tourist eSIM is inconvenient, international travel eSIM providers and home-carrier roaming commonly cover Sweden; confirm network, hotspot and voice/SMS needs before purchase.
