Entry & getting around

Regional Layout & Where to Base

Hotel travel in Romania is primarily city-based rather than resort-centric. Bucharest, the capital and economic center, serves as the main gateway for most international visitors. Other key hubs include Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Timișoara, and Brașov, which are ideal bases for exploring Transylvania or western border regions. Constanța is the primary coastal destination on the Black Sea. Travelers should choose their base based on itinerary focus, such as using Bucharest as a launchpad or spending more time in the Transylvanian heartland.

Entry & Getting Around

Romania is partially integrated into the Schengen Area (aviation and maritime sectors are included, but land borders remain outside). Visa requirements generally follow EU standards, but travelers must check the specific consulate guidelines for their nationality. Major international gateways include Bucharest Otopeni Airport, Cluj-Napoca International Airport, and Timișoara Traian Vuia Airport. Domestic transport is well-developed, with rail links connecting major cities and an improving road network. Given the country's size and varied terrain, combining flights, trains, and car rentals is recommended for efficient multi-city itineraries.

Loyalty Landscape

The hotel landscape in Romania is dominated by major international chains, with strong footprints from Hilton, Marriott, IHG, and Accor, particularly in key cities like Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, and Timișoara. These brands offer standard business and leisure amenities, catering well to frequent flyers. While local boutique hotels and guesthouses are gaining popularity in tourist hotspots like Brașov and Sibiu, international chain brands remain the primary choice for travelers prioritizing loyalty benefits, consistent service standards, and booking convenience.

Trip preparation

Health

For most visitors, use normal urban travel precautions: eat food served hot, wash hands, and use bottled/treated water when hiking or where water quality is uncertain. In summer, southern Romania and Bucharest can be hot; mountains can change weather quickly. Prevent mosquito/tick bites, especially outdoors and near the Danube Delta/forests; tick-borne encephalitis risk exists in endemic areas. Altitude illness is not a typical Romania issue, but high Carpathian hikes require weather, sun and hydration planning.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. CDC advises being up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, polio, flu, varicella, Tdap and shingles as applicable, plus COVID-19. Hepatitis A is recommended for unvaccinated travelers; Hepatitis B is recommended for many unvaccinated travelers. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine may be considered for higher animal/wildlife exposure or limited access to care. Tick-borne encephalitis vaccine is recommended/considered for extensive outdoor exposure in endemic areas. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and no yellow-fever certificate is required for Romania.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is well supported in Romania if your phone is unlocked and compatible. Apple lists Orange and Vodafone for carrier activation, Orange for quick transfer, and Orange, Vodafone and Telekom for QR/app-style activation; it also lists prepaid traveler eSIM options via Orange Travel and Vodafone Travel. Physical prepaid SIMs remain common in shops, malls and airports, and public Wi-Fi is available but should be treated as untrusted.
