Staying in Nepal

Nepal, officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a landlocked country in South Asia primarily situated in the Himalayas, with parts extending into the Indo-Gangetic Plain. It shares borders with China’s Tibet Autonomous Region to the north and India to the south, east, and west. The country boasts diverse geography, ranging from fertile plains to subalpine forests and eight of the world’s ten highest mountains, including Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth above mean sea level. Kathmandu serves as the capital and largest city, acting as the cultural and administrative hub within the historically significant Kathmandu Valley, which was once the seat of the prosperous Newar confederacy. Culturally, Nepal is a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, and multi-religious sovereign state where Nepali is the official language. The region holds profound historical importance as the birthplace of Gautama Buddha in Lumbini and a center for Hinduism dating back to the Vedic period. Historically, Nepal served as a buffer state between Imperial China and British India, never being colonized, and transitioned from a monarchy to a secular federal parliamentary republic in 2008 following the end of the Nepalese Civil War. The current political framework is defined by the Constitution of 2015, which divides the nation into seven provinces. For travelers, Nepal offers a unique blend of cosmopolitan urban experiences in Kathmandu and Pokhara, alongside world-class trekking and mountaineering opportunities. The central location of the Kathmandu Valley has long been a crossroads for trade along the Himalayan branch of the ancient Silk Road, fostering distinct traditional art and architecture. While the terrain presents logistical challenges, the main tourist circuits are well-established. Visitors should note that recent political developments, including protests in late 2025 leading to governmental changes, highlight the dynamic nature of the region. Travelers are advised to stay informed on local conditions and ensure all entry requirements are met through official channels.

Entry & getting around

Regional Structure & Accommodation Layout

Nepal's hotel industry is characterized by distinct regional concentrations. Kathmandu serves as the primary hub for business and culture, hosting the densest cluster of international brand hotels, making it ideal for urban exploration and cultural immersion. Pokhara acts as the gateway to the Annapurna range, featuring a higher proportion of resort-style and boutique accommodations focused on leisure and outdoor adventures. Due to the challenging terrain, high-end resorts are scattered, primarily located in the Kathmandu Valley and around Pokhara, while remote mountainous areas rely on lodges or basic guesthouses rather than large-scale resort complexes.

Transport Gateways & Domestic Connectivity

Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu is the country's sole international gateway, offering connections to major hubs in India, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. For domestic travel, short-haul flights are the most efficient way to traverse the Himalayan terrain, though schedules are frequently subject to weather-related disruptions. Road networks along key tourist corridors, such as the Kathmandu-Pokhara route, have seen improvements, but overland bus journeys remain time-consuming and complex due to topographical challenges. Frequent flyers are advised to prioritize accommodation within Kathmandu city limits to minimize transit times and logistical friction.

Entry & Visa Requirements

Nepal generally offers Visa on Arrival for citizens of most countries, available at Tribhuvan International Airport and designated land border crossings. Travelers must present a passport valid for at least six months, recent photographs, and the applicable visa fee. Visa policies and entry procedures can change due to political developments, such as the administrative shifts observed in late 2025. It is imperative to verify the latest entry requirements, health declarations, and fee structures directly with the official website of the Nepalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the nearest Nepalese consulate before departure.

Hotel Loyalty Landscape

The footprint of international hotel loyalty programs in Nepal is limited. Major global chains such as Marriott, Hilton, and IHG operate only a few flagship properties, primarily in Kathmandu, resulting in restricted benefits coverage for members. Local brands, including the Metropolitan Hotel and Himalaya Hotel, dominate the market share but typically do not participate in global loyalty networks. For frequent travelers, opportunities for earning points or redeeming free nights are scarce. It is advisable to focus on direct booking negotiations for room upgrades or leveraging local partner discounts rather than relying on international loyalty status for significant perks.

Trip preparation

Health

Use safe water and food habits; cholera transmission is reported, and travelers’ diarrhea is common. Prevent mosquito bites for dengue/chikungunya; malaria risk is mainly in some low-elevation western areas, not Kathmandu, Pokhara or typical Himalayan treks. For trekking, plan gradual altitude gain, sun/UV protection, heat/cold layers, and avoid animal bites.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least 4 weeks before travel. Be current on routine vaccines such as MMR, Tdap, polio, flu, varicella and COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A and typhoid for most travelers; hepatitis B is commonly advised. Japanese encephalitis, rabies pre-exposure, cholera vaccine, and malaria prevention depend on itinerary and risk. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended for Nepal, but a certificate is required if arriving from, or transiting more than 12 hours through, a yellow-fever-risk country.

eSIM / connectivity

Connectivity is practical in cities and tourist corridors, but mountain valleys and treks can be patchy. Ncell offers tourist SIM and tourist eSIM options, including online eSIM purchase, and physical tourist SIMs at Kathmandu airport, Ncell centres and authorized retailers; passport registration is required. Nepal Telecom and Ncell are the main local networks; confirm your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible before arrival.
