Where to Base
Stay near the Durbar Square area, the tourism center anchored by the Nyatapola Pagoda and the former Royal Palace. This location allows easy walking access to major sites, restaurants, and artisan workshops. It is ideal for experiencing the city's atmosphere while avoiding peak crowds, particularly in the early morning or late evening.
Getting Around
Travel from Kathmandu takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour by road. Within Bhaktapur, motorized traffic is restricted in many areas due to narrow streets and heritage preservation. Walking is the best way to explore the dense urban fabric and appreciate Newar architectural details. Local taxis or rickshaws can be used for short distances if needed.
Best Season
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer pleasant weather for outdoor exploration and photography. These are peak tourist seasons, so advance hotel booking is recommended. The monsoon season may disrupt travel, while winter is cooler but less crowded. Infrastructure improvements since the 1980s and post-2015 reconstruction make the city accessible year-round, though mild seasons provide the best experience.
