Staying in Mauritius

Mauritius, officially the Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean located approximately 2,000 km off the southeastern coast of Africa. The country comprises the main island of Mauritius, along with Rodrigues, Agaléga, and St. Brandon. The main island hosts the capital and largest city, Port Louis, and serves as the primary hub for both business and leisure travel. Travel in Mauritius is heavily resort-oriented, particularly along the coastal areas, though city-based accommodations are available in Port Louis for business travelers. The main international gateway is the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. Domestic connectivity includes flights to Rodrigues. Visitors should verify entry requirements and visa policies directly with the relevant consulate, as regulations may change. For frequent-flyer hotel travelers, the loyalty landscape is dominated by major global chains such as Marriott International and Hilton Worldwide, which have a significant footprint across the island. These programs offer extensive options for earning and redeeming points, particularly within the luxury resort segment. Independent boutique hotels also exist but may not participate in major loyalty programs. Travelers should prioritize properties affiliated with these large networks for consistent benefits and point accumulation opportunities.

Entry & getting around

Accommodation Model & Regional Structure

Hotel travel in Mauritius is predominantly resort-based, with a strong concentration of luxury beachfront properties along the northern and western coasts. These resorts cater primarily to leisure travelers seeking relaxation and water activities. In contrast, the capital city, Port Louis, offers a higher density of city-center hotels suitable for business travelers and those exploring urban culture. The island of Rodrigues, while part of the country, has a smaller, more independent hospitality sector. The regional structure favors coastal resorts for holidays, while urban centers serve as logistical hubs.

Gateways & Domestic Transport

The main international gateway is the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, located in the Grand Port District. This airport handles all major long-haul and regional flights. Domestic transport relies heavily on road networks, with car rentals and taxis being the most common ways to navigate the island. There are limited domestic flight options, primarily connecting the main island to Rodrigues. The infrastructure supports easy travel between coastal resorts and urban centers, making self-driving a viable option for frequent travelers.

Entry & Visa Requirements

Entry requirements for Mauritius vary depending on the traveler's nationality. Many visitors enjoy visa-free access or can obtain visas on arrival, but policies are subject to change. It is essential to check the latest regulations with the nearest Mauritian consulate or official government immigration website before traveling. Passports must typically be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry. Always verify specific documentation needs, such as proof of onward travel or sufficient funds, as these may be required for admission.

Loyalty Landscape

The hotel loyalty landscape in Mauritius is dominated by major global brands, with Marriott International and Hilton Worldwide having the strongest footprint. Marriott Bonvoy properties include a wide range of luxury resorts and city hotels, while Hilton Honors offers several key locations. Other programs like World of Hyatt and IHG One Rewards also have a presence, though with fewer properties. For frequent travelers, sticking to these major chains ensures consistent point accumulation, elite status benefits, and reliable service standards across the island.

Trip preparation

Health

Reference only, not medical advice. Mauritius is tropical: plan for heat, strong UV, hydration and reef/beach safety; altitude is not a practical issue for most visitors. CDC notes chikungunya outbreak risk and dengue risk, so prevent mosquito bites. Choose safe food/water, avoid floodwater or muddy freshwater after heavy rain, and avoid swimming in fresh unchlorinated lakes/rivers.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. CDC lists routine vaccines, COVID-19, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and typhoid as relevant for Mauritius; MMR is important because measles is rising globally. Rabies vaccine is case-by-case for animal exposure or limited access to care. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and not required for entry by CDC; check routing rules if transiting other countries. Chikungunya vaccine is generally not recommended; discuss risk if concerned.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is usable via many international travel-eSIM providers on Mauritian mobile networks, but local prepaid eSIM support should be checked before arrival. Main local carriers are my.t/Mauritius Telecom, Emtel and CHiLi/MTML; my.t and Emtel are the usual first checks for eSIM or tourist/prepaid data, while physical prepaid SIMs are common at airport/city shops. Bring passport for registration; coverage may thin on trails, at sea or in remote areas.
