Staying in Hungary

Hungary, a landlocked nation in Central Europe, is defined by the Carpathian Basin and dominated by vast lowland plains. Budapest, the capital and largest city, serves as the undisputed cultural and economic hub, making it the primary base for most travelers. The country boasts a well-developed transport network, with rail and road links connecting major urban centers and neighboring countries. As a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area, Hungary offers streamlined entry for many international visitors, though travelers should always verify specific visa requirements with the relevant consulate. The hotel landscape is characterized by urban business stays and thermal spa resorts, with a strong presence of major international loyalty programs in Budapest and key tourist destinations.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

Hungary is part of the Schengen Area, facilitating relatively smooth border crossings. Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport is the primary international gateway. Domestic transport relies on a dense railway network and highways connecting cities like Szeged, Debrecen, and Pécs. Frequent flyers should plan intercity travel in advance to maximize efficiency.

Where to Base

Budapest is the preferred base for the vast majority of travelers, offering a wide range of accommodations from luxury city hotels to unique spa lodgings. For exploring rural areas or wine regions, secondary bases in Eger or around Lake Balaton are viable, but the core itinerary should still center on the capital.

Loyalty Landscape

Major international hotel groups (such as Marriott, Hilton, IHG, and Accor) have a significant operational footprint in Hungary, particularly in Budapest. These brands cover a spectrum from upscale business to leisure travel, providing frequent flyers with reliable channels for point accumulation and redemption.

Visa & Entry Tips

As an EU and Schengen member, Hungary adheres to unified entry policies. While citizens of many countries enjoy visa-free access, regulations may change. Always consult the official website of Hungarian diplomatic missions or relevant authorities for the latest visa and entry requirements before travel.

Trip preparation

Health

Hungary has no meaningful altitude concern for typical trips. Urban food/water standards are generally high, but use normal safe-food habits and take care with untreated lake/river water. In summer, plan for heat and strong sun. In wooded/grass areas, prevent tick and mosquito bites; tick-borne encephalitis exists in parts of Europe/Hungary.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, polio, flu, varicella/shingles as applicable, and COVID-19. CDC lists hepatitis A and B for unvaccinated travelers; rabies may be considered for higher animal-exposure trips; tick-borne encephalitis vaccine may be considered/recommended for extensive outdoor tick exposure. Yellow-fever vaccine is not recommended and no yellow-fever certificate is required for Hungary.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is widely usable if your phone is unlocked and supports EU bands. Major local mobile networks are Magyar Telekom, Yettel Hungary, and One Hungary; Yettel and Telekom publish eSIM support, and travelers can also use international travel eSIMs. Local prepaid SIM/data options are sold by carrier shops and may require passport/ID registration; check current terms before relying on airport pickup.
