Pécs, the fifth-largest city in Hungary, serves as the administrative and economic hub of Baranya County. Nestled on the slopes of the Mecsek mountains in the southwest, it lies close to the Croatian border. With a history spanning over 2,000 years, the city was originally settled by Celts and Romans before becoming an important episcopal see in medieval Hungary. Today, it hosts Hungary's oldest university and stands as a major cultural center. Pécs is renowned for its unique architectural heritage, particularly the remnants of 150 years of Ottoman rule, boasting the highest concentration of Turkish Ottoman buildings in Central Europe. Its historical significance was further cemented when the Roman-era Christian necropolis was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Recognized as a European Capital of Culture, Pécs offers a rich tapestry of interacting cultures. For hotel travelers, the city provides a compact yet deeply historic environment, ideal for exploring ancient ruins, diverse religious sites, and vibrant cultural scenes within a walkable urban core.

‘Crumbs’ is a new wave bakery-cum-bistro with a relaxed urban style, owned by a charismatic and exuberant designer. Sit inside to watch the making of the delicious loaves and pastries or head out to the terrace for some people-watching in the part-pedestrianised lane. Modern, flavour-packed small plates are served throughout the day and can be accompanied by something from the biodynamic wine list. Naturally, a pastry is a must to finish, but with so many delicious options it can be hard to choose... and if you simply can't decide, there's always the option to take something home for later too
