Östersund

Östersund, the capital of Jämtland County in northern Sweden, stands as the only city in the region and the largest inland city in Northern Sweden. Founded in the 18th century to establish a trade monopoly, it has evolved into a vibrant cultural and economic hub situated on the shores of Storsjön, Sweden’s fifth-largest lake, directly opposite the island of Frösön. Known as 'Vinterstaden' (Winter City), Östersund offers a unique blend of historical charm and outdoor adventure. With a population of nearly 51,000, it serves as the heart of the region, hosting Mid Sweden University’s largest campus and serving as a central transit point between the Swedish coast and Norway. For frequent travelers, the city provides a distinct Scandinavian experience, characterized by its moderate climate relative to its latitude, extensive cross-country skiing infrastructure, and a strong tradition of hosting international sporting events like biathlon and speed skating championships.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

Base yourself in the city center or along the shores of Storsjön. As the region's cultural and economic center, this area offers the best access to commerce, dining, and the university campus. While the northern urban area extends into Krokom municipality, staying near the lake ensures proximity to the main attractions and the historic core.

Getting Around

Located in the middle of Scandinavia, Östersund connects Sundsvall on the east coast and Trondheim in Norway to the west. The city is a hub for outdoor activities, featuring a modern cross-country ski stadium and pistes within the city limits, making it easy to access nature and sports facilities directly from your hotel.

Best Season

Marketed as 'Vinterstaden' (Winter City), the winter months offer ideal conditions for skiing and ice sports, with a long history of hosting world championships. Summers are chilly but pleasant. The climate is moderately cold by northern standards, providing a comfortable environment for year-round outdoor enthusiasts without extreme weather disruptions.
