Sapporo Station
Main rail hub, malls, business hotels

Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido and Japan's fifth-largest city, serves as a vibrant cultural and economic hub north of Tokyo. Originally planned on a grid inspired by ancient Japanese capitals, the city centers around Odori Park and offers a unique blend of urban convenience and natural beauty. As the first Asian host of the Winter Olympics (1972), Sapporo is renowned for its world-class winter sports infrastructure and the massive Sapporo Snow Festival, which attracts over two million visitors annually. For hotel travelers, the city provides excellent connectivity via New Chitose Airport and Okadama Airport, making it an ideal base for exploring Hokkaido. Whether seeking business amenities near Sapporo Station or leisure options close to Hokkaido University, guests will find a diverse range of accommodations suited to both short layovers and extended stays.

New Chitose Airport (CTS) is the main gateway. JR Airport trains run directly to Sapporo Station in about 37-40 minutes and are usually the simplest choice. Airport buses serve Sapporo Station, Odori, Susukino and major hotels in about 70-90 minutes depending on stops and traffic. Taxi/private transfer is roughly 60-80 minutes. Okadama Airport (OKD) handles some regional flights; use the airport bus to Sapporo Station or bus/walk to Sakaemachi Station on the Toho subway line, then subway to the centre.

Sapporo is easy by subway: Namboku, Tozai and Toho lines meet at Odori; Sapporo Station, Odori, Susukino and Nakajima Park are on/near the Namboku Line. The streetcar loop is useful for Moiwa and west-side neighborhoods. Most visitors should use an IC card they already have, such as Suica, PASMO, ICOCA or Kitaca; SAPICA is local but not useful for JR outside its area. Subway day passes and the weekend/holiday Donichika pass can make sense for heavy subway days. In winter, use the underground passages between Sapporo Station, Odori and Susukino when streets are icy.

Prioritize areas around Odori Park and Sapporo Station. This central district places you within walking distance of key landmarks like the Sapporo TV Tower and Beer Museum, while offering direct access to extensive public transport networks and dining options.
Most travelers arrive via New Chitose Airport in nearby Chitose. Efficient rail and bus services connect the airport directly to Sapporo city center, ensuring a smooth and relatively quick transfer for hotel check-ins.
Winter (January-February) offers the iconic Snow Festival and skiing, while summer provides cool relief from humidity. Due to high tourist volumes during peak seasons, early booking for central hotels is recommended.
