Nevsehir

Nevşehir serves as the administrative heart of the Cappadocia region in Central Anatolia. While the modern town itself is not a primary tourist hub, it offers a strategic base for exploring nearby fairy chimneys, underground cities, and rock-hewn churches. Located at an elevation of 1,224 meters, the city experiences a continental climate with heavy winter snows and intense summer heat. Recognized as a World Peace City by the UN, Nevşehir provides essential infrastructure, including Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University and Cappadocia University, making it a functional transit and accommodation point for frequent travelers venturing into the historical Cappadocia landscape.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

Although Nevşehir has hotels, the modern town is not itself a tourist centre. It is best used as a strategic base for exploring the surrounding historical sites of Cappadocia, such as the recently discovered underground city and nearby monasteries, rather than expecting the town itself to be the primary destination.

Getting Around

Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport is located 30 kilometres northwest of the town. The inter-city bus station is about 6 km southwest of the city centre. While two planned high-speed rail services will eventually link the city to Ankara, Konya, and Kayseri, current travel relies heavily on road transport to reach the scattered historical sites of Cappadocia.

Best Season

The city has a continental climate with heavy snow in winter and great heat in summer. For hotel travelers, spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring the outdoor fairy chimneys and historical sites, avoiding the extreme temperatures of the other seasons.
