Fukuoka, the largest city in Kyushu and Japan's sixth most populous, serves as a historic gateway to the Asian mainland. Surpassing Kyoto in population, it boasts a distinct local culture and dialect shaped by its relative distance from traditional political centers like Tokyo and Osaka. As a major hub for international commerce, Fukuoka offers convenient access and a vibrant atmosphere. For frequent travelers, it provides an ideal base for exploring the region, with well-connected neighborhoods and a rich culinary scene that reflects its unique historical position.

For most visitors, the main airport is Fukuoka Airport (FUK). The Domestic Terminal is directly connected to Fukuoka City Subway Airport Line: about 5 min to Hakata and about 11 min to Tenjin, usually the simplest first choice. From the International Terminal, take the free inter-terminal shuttle about 10 min to the Domestic Terminal/subway, or use direct local buses to Hakata or Tenjin, typically about 20-35 min depending on traffic. Taxis are practical because the airport is close to town: roughly 15-30 min to Hakata/Tenjin, longer in traffic or from the international side.

Fukuoka is easy by subway plus bus. The subway has three real visitor-useful lines: Airport Line for airport, Hakata, Nakasu-Kawabata, Tenjin, Ohori Park and Nishijin; Hakozaki Line from Nakasu-Kawabata toward the northeast; and Nanakuma Line linking Hakata, Kushida Shrine, Tenjin-Minami, Yakuin and Ropponmatsu. Use a rechargeable IC card: Hayakaken is the subway card, while nimoca, SUGOCA, Suica and other major Japan IC cards also work. A subway day pass can make sense on subway-heavy days. Buses fill gaps to Seaside Momochi/Fukuoka Tower, the dome and some waterfront areas; allow extra time in traffic.

Base yourself near Hakata Station or Tenjin. Hakata offers superior transport links to the airport and Shinkansen, while Tenjin is the heart of shopping and dining. Both areas feature a high density of business and luxury hotels, ensuring easy access to the city's commercial and cultural hubs.
Fukuoka Airport is exceptionally close to the city center. Reaching Hakata or Tenjin via subway or taxi takes only about 10-15 minutes. This proximity makes it an ideal destination for short business trips or weekend stays, eliminating the need for lengthy commutes often associated with other major Japanese cities.
The city features a well-developed subway network covering major hotel districts and attractions. Given its manageable size, walking and cycling are excellent ways to explore the Hakata Bay shoreline and historic districts. Public transport is efficient, allowing business travelers to easily navigate between meetings and sightseeing opportunities.
Spring and autumn offer pleasant weather ideal for outdoor activities and city exploration. While summer is hot, it hosts numerous festivals. Winters are relatively mild. As the gateway to Kyushu, it is accessible year-round, though avoiding typhoon season ensures smoother travel plans.
