Centro Histórico / Walled City
Colonial core, walkable sights, boutique hotels

Cartagena de Indias is a jewel on Colombia's Caribbean coast, renowned for its colonial history, vibrant architecture, and warm atmosphere. The walled Old Town (Ciudad Amurallada), surrounded by historic fortifications like Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, is the primary hub for hotel travelers, offering a high concentration of boutique hotels and easy access to major cultural sites. For those preferring modern amenities and nightlife, the Getsemaní neighborhood and newer districts provide contemporary lodging options just outside the historic center. This city seamlessly blends rich heritage with tropical relaxation, making it an excellent base for frequent flyers seeking both cultural immersion and leisure. The compact nature of the historic district allows for efficient exploration on foot, while the surrounding areas offer diverse dining and entertainment options.

Cartagena’s main airport is Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG) in Crespo, inside the city. There is no train or metro. For first arrivals, use the authorized airport taxi ranks, a prebooked transfer, or app taxi; the historic center is usually about 10–20 minutes, Bocagrande about 15–25 minutes, traffic depending. Transcaribe bus route T102 serves Crespo/Centro, but stops require a short walk from the terminal and are less convenient with luggage.

Cartagena has no metro; public transit is Transcaribe BRT and buses. For tourists who will ride it more than once, get the anonymous rechargeable Transcaribe smart card and top it up at stations, Patio Portal, or authorized recharge points. The Walled City, San Diego and Getsemaní are best on foot; use taxis/apps for late nights, heat, rain, Bocagrande, Manga and airport trips.

The airport is approximately 45 minutes from the city center. Taxis and ride-sharing are convenient. Walking is recommended within the Old Town to avoid heat and traffic congestion.
December to April is the dry season with pleasant weather, marking the peak tourist period. Summer brings rain but fewer crowds, offering more flexibility in hotel bookings.
