Boscastle

Boscastle is a picturesque fishing village and port on Cornwall's north coast, featuring the only significant harbor for 20 miles along this stretch of coastline. Nestled within the Cornwall National Landscape, the village extends up the valleys of the River Valency and River Jordan. The South West Coast Path passes directly through, offering stunning coastal walks. While it lacks major airport connectivity, its secluded charm and historic harbor walls make it an ideal base for travelers seeking tranquility and natural beauty away from crowded tourist hubs.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

Accommodations are typically situated in the valley areas near the River Valency or close to the historic harbor. Staying near the South West Coast Path provides easy access to scenic hikes and ensures a quiet, authentic Cornish village atmosphere, ideal for unwinding after a day of exploration.

Airport Connection

There is no direct airport access. Travelers typically fly into nearby hubs like Newquay Cornwall Airport or Exeter, then take connecting bus or taxi services. Boscastle is located 14 miles south of Bude, requiring a drive or bus ride to reach the village, making pre-arranged transport advisable.

Best Season

Summer offers mild weather perfect for coastal walking and harbor visits. However, visitors should be aware of the village's history with heavy rainfall events, such as the 2004 floods. Checking weather forecasts and ensuring accommodation is in a safe zone is recommended, especially during autumn and winter months.

Dining

The Rocket Store

Restaurant£££611 m

Ticking all the boxes for a coastal seafood restaurant, this compact and pretty ‘shed’ is found in a picturesque harbour village and was once used to store the coastguard’s rocket-firing equipment. The chef’s father is a fisherman and brings his catch to the restaurant every day, while other ingredients come from the family's farm in the hills above Boscastle. All this local produce is fashioned into a blackboard-written menu of bright, fresh dishes such as butterflied mackerel with vibrant nahm jim. The friendly, enthusiastic service adds to the experience.
