Staying in United Kingdom

For hotel travelers, the United Kingdom works best as a set of well-connected city bases with easy extensions into historic towns, coast and countryside. London is the natural first base for many international arrivals, while Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cardiff and Belfast give practical regional anchors for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Entry requirements should be checked on GOV.UK: the official guidance says most visitors need either an ETA or a visa, depending on nationality and purpose, and an ETA allows travel to the UK for up to six months but does not guarantee entry. Once in the country, travelers can combine National Rail between cities with local networks, buses, coaches, trams and ferries. The loyalty landscape is broad: Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors and ALL Accor all publish substantial UK destination pages, and IHG One Rewards is especially relevant given IHG’s UK corporate base and its large global brand family.

Trip preparation

Health

UK tap water and food standards are generally high. Main practical risks are changeable weather, winter cold, summer heat waves, sun/UV during outdoor trips, ticks/midges in rural or wooded areas, and water hazards on coasts/lakes. No high-altitude issue for typical itineraries; mosquito-borne disease risk is low.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic before travel. CDC advises being up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR and polio, plus COVID-19 as eligible. Hepatitis A may be considered for most travelers, especially rural/smaller-city or street-food plans; hepatitis B is recommended for unvaccinated travelers under 60. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is usually only for higher-risk animal/bat exposure. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and no certificate is required for UK entry.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is widely usable in the UK if your phone is unlocked and compatible. Major local networks include EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three; O2 and Three publish eSIM setup/support, and local PAYG SIM/data-pack options are common. Travelers can also buy UK or Europe data-only travel eSIMs before arrival; check coverage for rural Scotland, Wales and islands.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-06-20).
