Baku

Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan and the largest city on the Caspian Sea, holds the distinction of being the lowest-lying national capital in the world. Situated on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, this 'City of Winds' blends ancient heritage with modern ambition. The historic Old City, home to the UNESCO-listed Palace of the Shirvanshahs and Maiden Tower, contrasts sharply with the futuristic skyline of the new district. As the scientific, cultural, and industrial hub of the country, Baku has hosted major global events including the Eurovision Song Contest and Formula 1 races. For frequent travelers, the city offers a unique mix of deep history and contemporary infrastructure, making it a compelling destination for both business and leisure.

Getting there & around

From the airport

Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) is Baku's main airport, about 20 km northeast of the centre. There is no airport metro or train. The Aero Express/H1 airport bus links Terminals 1/2 with 28 May metro/rail hub, usually about 30-45 minutes depending on traffic and stops. Taxis and ride-hailing are the easiest door-to-door option; use the official airport taxi stand or app-based cars, and expect roughly 20-35 minutes to central areas in normal traffic.

Around the city

Baku Metro is useful, clean and simple, with 3 lines and key visitor stops such as Icherisheher, Sahil, 28 May, Ganjlik, Nariman Narimanov and Koroglu. Get a BakıKART: the reloadable plastic card suits most visitors using metro and city buses; limited-use paper cards also exist for very short stays. Buy/top up at metro stations, BakıKART terminals and marked kiosks. Buses can fill up and traffic is heavy at peak times, so combine metro for cross-city trips with walking or taxis for late nights and waterfront/outer areas.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base: Old City vs. New District

Travelers seeking historical ambiance should consider staying near the Old City to easily explore UNESCO World Heritage sites like the Maiden Tower. Business travelers or those preferring modern amenities will find the New District more suitable, offering proximity to international conference centers, high-end shopping, and the vibrant nightlife along the Boulevard.

Getting Around

Baku features a comprehensive public transport network connecting its twelve administrative raions. While walking is pleasant in compact areas like the Old City, using taxis or metro is efficient for longer distances across the metropolitan area. Visitors should be aware of the city's nickname, the 'City of Winds,' and prepare for strong gusts that can affect outdoor comfort.

Best Season

Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for exploring the Old City and the Caspian coastline. Summers can be hot and windy, while winters are cooler. Note that Baku hosts major international events such as the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and European Games; during these periods, hotel availability tightens significantly, so advance booking is essential for frequent flyers.
