Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) is Baku’s main airport and Azerbaijan’s primary international gateway, functioning as an important regional hub between the Caucasus, the Caspian region, Europe, Turkey, the Middle East and Central Asia. It is the home base/headquarters airport for Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), with AZAL Miles as the local frequent-flyer program; Silk Way group carriers also give the airport a notable cargo role. GYD is not a global-alliance hub for oneworld, Star Alliance or SkyTeam, so alliance flyers should check carrier-by-carrier lounge and through-check arrangements rather than assuming alliance-wide benefits. The airport has two passenger terminals: Terminal 1 is the modern main international terminal, while Terminal 2 handles domestic services and some short-haul/international operations. For the city, Aero Express to 28 May is the most predictable public-transport choice at about 30 minutes in normal conditions; official airport taxis are better for door-to-door trips and usually take roughly 20–40 minutes depending on traffic. For transits, through-ticket AZAL/international connections are straightforwardest; self-connects should allow a generous buffer because terminal changes, immigration, baggage and security can turn a short connection into a landside transfer.
