Getting there & around

From the airport

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is the main airport. There is no airport train. CapMetro Route 20 runs from the lower level outside baggage claim to Downtown and UT about every 15-30 minutes; allow about 35 minutes to Downtown. Route 483 Night Owl covers late-night airport service to Downtown after midnight to about 4 a.m. Taxis and rideshares pick up under the Consolidated Rental Car Facility behind the Red Garage; driving to Downtown is usually about 15-25 minutes, longer in traffic.

Around the city

CapMetro runs Austin’s buses, MetroRapid routes and the MetroRail Red Line. For most visitors, buses plus walking/rideshare cover Downtown, South Congress, East Austin and Zilker best; MetroRail is more useful for north-side stops such as the Domain area and suburbs than for central sightseeing. Use the Transit app for planning and the Umo app or a CapMetro reloadable card for passes; contactless tap-to-pay works on buses with daily fare capping, but not on Rail. Check service alerts and do not assume late-night frequency outside entertainment districts.

The mark of a good place is when a line starts forming before they've even opened, and at InterStellar BBQ, it's long before they've swung open the door. Everyone is here for a taste of pitmaster John Bates's barbecue, done low and slow over post oak. Brisket with a simple salt, pepper and garlic rub is outstanding but it doesn't end there. Peach tea-glazed pork belly is meltingly tender; the beer-brined tipsy turkey is moist and delicious; and there are three sausages on offer, including kielbasa. You can't go wrong with any of the enticing side dishes like the Frito pie, though the smoked sc

Tare

Restaurant$$$$4.3 km

Found on the second floor of a North Austin professional building, Tare's odd location makes for a curious first impression. There is no signage, but an attendant is stationed out front to welcome diners before each seating. Once inside, the space is attractive with a dark granite counter. Chef Michael Carranza and his small team prepare a kappo-style experience, and the foundation of the meal is an array of embellished nigiri. Fish is sourced from Japan and dry-aged in-house, but tuna from Spain and ocean trout from New Zealand may also make an appearance. There is a creative streak with a Te
