Aspen

Aspen, named after the poplar tree species (Populus sect. Populus) once referred to as 'asps', is a premier mountain resort destination in the United States. While the name evokes nature, the city itself is a hub for luxury travel, world-class skiing, and high-end culture. For frequent-flyer hotel travelers, Aspen offers a compact yet distinct geographic layout centered around its historic downtown and surrounding ski areas. The city is not defined by sprawling suburbs but by walkable neighborhoods that serve as ideal bases for exploring the Rockies. Travelers should note that while the Wikipedia context clarifies the botanical origin of the name, the actual appeal lies in its status as a sophisticated alpine retreat. Accommodations range from full-service luxury hotels to boutique properties, catering to those seeking both winter sports access and summer mountain activities. The area is best navigated via shuttle services or private transfers, given the limited parking and pedestrian-friendly core.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

Base yourself in Downtown Aspen for maximum convenience. This compact, walkable district places you within steps of world-class dining, art galleries, and shopping. It also serves as the central hub for the free Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) bus system, providing easy access to all major ski areas without the hassle of driving.

Getting Around & Airport

Aspen does not have a major international airport. Most travelers fly into Denver (DEN) or Salt Lake City (SLC) and take a connecting regional flight to Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE). Once in town, rely on hotel shuttles, taxis, or the local RFTA bus system. Driving requires experience with mountain roads, especially during winter months when snow conditions can be challenging.

Best Season

Winter (December to March) is peak season for skiing, offering vibrant nightlife and busy slopes, but accommodations book up quickly. Summer (June to September) provides mild weather ideal for hiking, biking, and cultural festivals like the music festival. Spring and fall offer quieter experiences with fewer crowds, though some seasonal attractions may have limited hours.

Restaurant Michelin$$$$831 m

At this singular enclave, Chef Barclay Dodge and his team are executing seasonally inspired cooking that focuses on foraging, fermenting and local farms. The intimate, dimly lit interior reads moody and mysterious, but everything about the experience is open and accommodating, starting with the charmingly loquacious staff and impressive wine list. Though you can opt for a shorter menu, the full chef's tasting paints a complete picture. The likes of cocoa, miso, preserves, nuts and koji are deployed in imaginative, delicious ways. Indeed, this is a team that pays attention to detail — even ingr

The name is a nod to Aspen’s origins as a silver mining town, and its location inside the luxurious Little Nell Hotel, mere steps away from the slopes, is certainly glitzy. The lunch crowd leans into comforting, warm bowls of tortilla soup and verdant salads. Mawa's Kitchen

Restaurant$$$4.6 km

Mawa's Kitchen may not be the easiest to find with its tucked-away entrance, but stay the course because it's worth visiting this welcoming spot. Light colors, tasteful artwork and bare tables set with wildflower-filled vases create a mood-boosting vibe inside, while the outdoor terrace is a breezy perch. The food is equally appealing (think new-world meets old-world). Owner Mawa McQueen, who hails from the Côte d’Ivoire, delivers extraordinary quality with everyday value, such as black-eyed pea hummus served with pickled, charred and smoked vegetables and bread.
