Staying in El Salvador

El Salvador, officially the Republic of El Salvador, is a country in Central America bordered by Honduras to the northeast, Guatemala to the northwest, and the Pacific Ocean to the south. Its capital and largest city is San Salvador, with an estimated population of 6 million in 2024. Historically influenced by the Maya and Cuzcatlec civilizations, the region was colonized by the Spanish Empire in the early 16th century and gained independence in 1821. After periods of political instability and a civil war that ended in 1992 with the Chapultepec Peace Accords, El Salvador is now a multiparty constitutional republic. The economy has traditionally been dominated by agriculture, notably cacao and indigo production. Today, it offers travelers a blend of rich archaeological heritage, colonial history, and Pacific coastal scenery.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

International travelers primarily enter via San Salvador International Airport. Domestic transport relies heavily on road networks connecting major hubs such as San Salvador, La Libertad, and Ahuachapán. Given the country's size, inter-city travel times are generally short. Visa requirements vary by nationality; travelers should always check with the nearest consulate for official entry regulations.

Accommodation Layout: Urban Bases & Coastal Resorts

El Salvador's hotel landscape is distinctly regional. San Salvador, the capital and economic hub, serves as the primary base for business travelers, hosting numerous international chains and upscale urban hotels. Coastal areas, particularly around El Tigre Island near La Libertad, concentrate resorts catering to leisure guests. This structure allows travelers to choose between urban business bases or coastal relaxation spots depending on their itinerary.

Loyalty Landscape

The hotel loyalty landscape in El Salvador is dominated by major global chains. Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and IHG One Rewards have a significant footprint, particularly in San Salvador and key coastal tourism zones. These international brands typically offer standardized service experiences and points accumulation opportunities, making them the preferred choice for frequent flyers.

Trip preparation

Health

Use safe-food and safe-water habits; bottled or treated water is prudent outside trusted hotels/restaurants. Mosquito-borne dengue and Zika risk exists; use repellent, long sleeves, screens/AC. El Salvador is WHO-certified malaria-free, but bite prevention still matters. Expect strong sun, heat and humidity on the coast; hydrate and pace volcano/highland hikes.

Vaccinations

Reference only: consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. CDC lists routine vaccines plus COVID-19, hepatitis A, hepatitis B and typhoid as relevant for many travelers; rabies may be considered for animal/outdoor exposure or limited access to care. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended for El Salvador, but proof is required for travelers age 1+ arriving from, or transiting more than 12 hours in, a yellow-fever-risk country; direct U.S. travel does not require it.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is available but not universal across every local operator. Claro El Salvador and Movistar El Salvador publish eSIM options for prepaid/postpaid or digital activation; Tigo, Claro and Movistar also sell local prepaid data packages/SIMs. Check phone compatibility/unlock status before arrival; airport and city shops can help with local setup.
