Staying in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia, the largest country in the Middle East, offers a diverse landscape ranging from arid deserts and rugged mountains to pristine coastlines along the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. As the birthplace of Islam and home to its two holiest cities, Mecca and Medina, the Kingdom has historically been a primary destination for religious pilgrimage. However, under the Vision 2030 initiative, the country is rapidly diversifying its tourism sector, opening up to leisure travelers with new mega-projects like NEOM, AlUla, and the Red Sea Project. For frequent-flyer hotel travelers, the landscape is evolving. Riyadh serves as the primary business hub with a growing inventory of international luxury brands, while Jeddah acts as the gateway to the Red Sea coast and the holy cities. Domestic connectivity is improving via major airlines, linking key regions. The hotel loyalty landscape is shifting, with global chains expanding their footprint significantly to cater to both business and emerging leisure markets. Travelers should note that while entry requirements are becoming more streamlined for tourists, regulations remain distinct, and checking official consular sources is essential before planning.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

Saudi Arabia offers eVisas and visa-on-arrival options for many nationalities, but regulations change frequently. Always verify current entry requirements with the nearest Saudi consulate or official government portal before traveling. For domestic transport, major cities like Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, and the holy cities (Mecca/Medina) are well-connected by air. The Haramain High Speed Railway provides efficient rail links between Jeddah, Mecca, and Medina. Car rentals and ride-hailing apps are widely available for local transit.

Where to Base

Riyadh is the central hub for business travelers, featuring a high concentration of international luxury brands near key government and commercial districts, as well as heritage sites like Diriyah. Jeddah serves as the gateway to the Red Sea resorts and a transit point for pilgrims, offering upscale coastal accommodations. Mecca and Medina are dominated by large-scale hotel complexes catering primarily to religious pilgrims. Meanwhile, historical sites like AlUla in the north and the futuristic NEOM project are emerging as premier destinations for eco-tourism and luxury leisure.

Loyalty Landscape

Major global hotel groups, including Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Hyatt, and Accor, have a strong and expanding footprint in Saudi Arabia, particularly in Riyadh's business districts, Jeddah, and along the Red Sea coast. These brands offer standard points earning and elite benefits, making them the primary vehicles for frequent travelers to accumulate nights and points. As new tourism projects develop, the selection of select-service and luxury brands continues to grow, enhancing the utility of major loyalty programs in the region.

Trip preparation

Health

Reference only, not medical advice. Saudi Arabia is hot and arid; summer, desert trips, and Hajj/Umrah crowds raise heat-illness and dehydration risk. Use safe food/water habits, hydrate, and limit midday exertion. Dengue and other bite-borne infections occur; malaria risk is limited to Asir and Jazan near Yemen, not Jeddah, Mecca, Medina, Riyadh or Taif. Some Asir highlands are high enough to pace activity if altitude-sensitive. Avoid camel contact if concerned about MERS.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, polio, flu, Tdap/DTaP, varicella and shingles as applicable, plus COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A for unvaccinated travelers, hepatitis B for many travelers, and typhoid for most travelers. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine may be considered for animal-contact or remote trips. Meningococcal ACWY proof is required for Hajj/Umrah travelers. Yellow-fever vaccine is not recommended for Saudi Arabia itself, but a certificate is required if arriving from, or transiting over 12 hours in, a yellow-fever-risk country.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is broadly supported in major cities and airports if your phone is unlocked and eSIM-capable. Main local networks include stc, Mobily and Zain; stc publishes eSIM activation via the mystc app and has Sawa Visitor packages for tourists, business travelers, Hajj and Umrah visitors. Check coverage for desert or remote Red Sea/Asir routes before relying on mobile data.
