Staying in Portugal

Portugal works well for hotel travelers who want to combine city bases, Atlantic coast stays and island extensions. Lisbon and Porto are the natural urban anchors, the Algarve is the main southern beach-hotel corridor, and Madeira and the Azores are best treated as flight-linked add-ons rather than simple mainland side trips. For entry, Portugal follows Schengen short-stay rules: non-EU nationals who need a visa use the Schengen visa framework, while visa-exempt travelers are governed by the 90-days-in-any-180-days short-stay rule. Air access is spread across Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Madeira and Ponta Delgada, with TAP and SATA/Azores Airlines relevant for domestic and island links. On the mainland, CP rail, intercity coaches and rental cars cover most hotel itineraries, with trains especially useful for Lisbon-Porto-Coimbra-Aveiro and Lisbon-Algarve planning. For loyalty stays, check city by city: in this search, Hilton Honors had the clearest broad Portugal directory, while other global programs should be verified against the exact base you plan to use.

Entry & getting around

Portugal follows Schengen short-stay rules: travelers who need a visa use the Schengen visa system, and short visits are limited to 90 days in any 180-day period. Main gateways include Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Madeira and Ponta Delgada; mainland travel is practical by rail, coach and car.

Trip preparation

Health

Portugal has modern visitor infrastructure. Tap water is generally treated in cities and resort areas; use normal food hygiene and treated/boiled water when hiking or in remote settings. CDC notes bug-bite risks such as leishmaniasis and Zika, so use repellent outdoors. Summer heat/UV can be significant, especially inland/Algarve; hydrate and avoid midday exertion. Typical trips have little altitude risk, though mountain weather can change quickly.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. CDC advises being up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR because measles is rising globally, plus COVID-19 as eligible. Hepatitis A is considered for most travelers, especially rural areas or street food; hepatitis B is recommended for unvaccinated travelers under 60 and may be considered for older travelers. Rabies is uncommon in dogs but pre-exposure vaccine may be discussed for animal-risk or remote trips. Yellow-fever vaccine is not recommended and no certificate is required for Portugal.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is widely usable on compatible phones in Portugal’s main cities and tourist regions. Major local mobile networks include MEO, NOS, Vodafone Portugal and newer Digi/NOWO services; MEO, NOS and Vodafone support eSIM for many mobile plans. Travelers can also buy prepaid data SIM/eSIM options from carrier shops, airport/urban retail points, or reputable online travel-eSIM providers; check passport/ID registration rules, island coverage, and device compatibility before purchase.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-06-20).
