Lagos

Lagos sits in southwestern Nigeria on Lagos Lagoon and the Gulf of Guinea, with a cityscape shaped by islands, sandbars, bridges and mainland districts. For hotel searches, the main decision is usually whether to stay on the Island or the Mainland. Victoria Island and Ikoyi suit business, dining and nightlife access; Lagos Island and Onikan put visitors closer to older civic and cultural sights; Lekki is useful for galleries, the conservation centre and the coast; Ikeja is practical for early or late flights because Murtala Muhammed International Airport is located there. Transfers from the airport are by road, with island-bound journeys using Lagos’s bridge network, so traffic and the day’s meeting or sightseeing area matter when choosing a base.

Getting there & around

From the airport

Lagos is served mainly by Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) in Ikeja. For first arrivals, use a hotel-arranged car, licensed airport taxi, or app ride; allow about 35-75 minutes to Lagos Island/Marina or Victoria Island, and 60-120+ minutes in heavy traffic. Ikeja hotels are usually 10-25 minutes away. There is no direct airport metro/train into the island districts; public buses can connect from the Mafoluku/Oshodi area but are less convenient with luggage.

Around the city

Lagos now has Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line between Marina and Mile 2, plus Red Line service on the mainland corridor toward Oyingbo/Agbado, with BRT/bus routes and ferries covering other corridors. Get a Cowry Card, used for regulated buses and rail. For most visitors, combine rail/BRT where routes fit with app rides or hotel cars for door-to-door trips. Plan around traffic, especially Third Mainland Bridge and Lekki-Epe approaches; avoid informal minibuses unless you know the route.
