Staying in Myanmar

Myanmar (ISO code: MM), formerly known as Burma, is the largest country by area in Mainland Southeast Asia, bordered by India, Bangladesh, China, Laos, and Thailand. Its capital is Naypyidaw, while its largest city is Yangon. The nation boasts a rich history, from the ancient Pagan Kingdom to the British colonial era and subsequent independence in 1948. However, its post-independence history has been marked by continuous unrest, including a 1962 military coup and ongoing conflicts involving ethnic minorities. Currently, the country is under military rule following the dissolution of the nominally civilian government established in 2011. Travelers should exercise extreme caution due to the volatile security situation.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Visa Requirements

Myanmar requires visas for most foreign nationals, with specific regulations subject to change due to the ongoing political instability and security concerns. Travelers must verify current entry requirements, including visa types and documentation, directly with the nearest Myanmar consulate or official government sources before departure. Given the volatile situation, entry policies can shift rapidly without prior notice.

Key Gateways & Transport

Yangon International Airport serves as the primary international gateway, connecting Myanmar to major global hubs. Domestic transportation relies heavily on flights, roads, and river transport. Due to infrastructure limitations and security risks associated with the ongoing conflict, long-distance land travel can be hazardous and time-consuming. Flying between major cities is often the preferred method for travelers, though all movements should be planned with careful attention to local safety advisories.

Accommodation Landscape

The hotel sector in Myanmar is concentrated in major urban centers like Yangon, Mandalay, and Naypyidaw, as well as cultural hubs such as Bagan. Accommodations range from business hotels to resorts, but standards vary significantly due to economic constraints and limited investment. Access to certain regions may be restricted due to ongoing conflicts, so travelers should base their accommodation choices on current security assessments and available infrastructure.

Hotel Loyalty Programs

International hotel loyalty programs have a limited footprint in Myanmar. Brands such as Marriott, Hilton, and IHG operate a small number of properties primarily in Yangon and Mandalay. Local chains and boutique hotels constitute a significant portion of the market. Due to political and economic challenges, expansion by international groups has been slow, and loyalty program benefits, including point accumulation and redemption, may be restricted. Travelers should verify which specific hotels participate in their preferred loyalty programs before booking.

Trip preparation

Health

Use safe food and water habits: bottled/treated water, careful street food choices, and hand hygiene. CDC notes cholera transmission and malaria risk in all areas; dengue, chikungunya and Zika are mosquito-borne risks, so use repellent, covered clothing and screened/AC rooms. Avoid freshwater exposure where sanitation is poor; leptospirosis can occur. Heat and UV can be intense, especially before monsoon; hydrate and pace outdoor plans. Highlands such as Shan State are cooler, but true altitude illness is mainly a concern on higher treks in remote northern mountains.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least 4 weeks before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines such as MMR, polio, Tdap/Td, flu, varicella and shingles where applicable, plus COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A and B for unvaccinated travelers, typhoid for most travelers, and Japanese encephalitis depending on rural/long-stay plans. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine may be considered for animal-contact risk or limited access to care. Cholera vaccine may be considered for areas with active transmission. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended for Myanmar itself, but a certificate is required for travelers aged 1+ arriving from, or transiting over 12 hours in, a yellow-fever-risk country.

eSIM / connectivity

Myanmar has local eSIM support, but availability and activation can be less predictable than in major regional hubs. Main mobile operators include MPT, ATOM, Ooredoo Myanmar and Mytel; local prepaid SIM/eSIM or data packs usually require passport registration at an operator shop or authorized retailer. Physical SIMs remain common, so verify eSIM support for your device and arrival city before relying on it. Expect possible coverage gaps, internet restrictions or outages outside major cities or during disruptions.
