Staying in Morocco

Morocco, officially the Kingdom of Morocco, is a North African nation in the Maghreb region, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. With Rabat as its capital and Casablanca as its largest city, the country offers a rich tapestry of Arab, Berber, Andalusian, and African cultural influences. Islam is the predominant religion, while Arabic and Berber are official languages; French and Moroccan Arabic are widely spoken. Historically significant as a regional power and the only North African nation to escape Ottoman rule, Morocco features diverse landscapes ranging from coastal plains to mountain ranges and desert edges. For frequent travelers, it serves as a strategic hub combining historical depth with modern connectivity.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

Entry requirements should be verified with the relevant consulate prior to travel. Major international gateways include Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca and Menara Airport in Marrakech. Domestic transport is anchored by the ONCF rail network connecting key cities such as Rabat, Fes, and Marrakech, supplemented by extensive bus services. For business travelers, high-speed rail and domestic flights provide efficient connectivity between major urban centers.

Accommodation Layout: City-Based Focus

The accommodation landscape in Morocco is predominantly city-based rather than resort-centric. Casablanca, Rabat, and Fes host dense clusters of business hotels suitable for conferences and short stays. Marrakech and Tangier offer a blend of traditional Riad boutique properties and modern chain brands. While desert camps exist in the south, most travelers use northern and central major cities as bases for multi-day exploration.

Loyalty Landscape

Major international hotel groups (such as Marriott, Hilton, and IHG) maintain a significant footprint in primary commercial cities, offering standard points earning and redemption options. Local and regional brands also hold a presence in the upscale segment. As Morocco may not be the absolute core market for all global loyalty programs, travelers are advised to focus on the coverage of specific international alliances in hub cities like Casablanca and Marrakech to optimize stay value.

Trip preparation

Health

Reference only, not medical advice. Use safe food/water habits; consider bottled or treated water outside trusted settings. Avoid swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water. Prevent mosquito/sand-fly bites; leishmaniasis and other bite-borne risks exist. Summer heat, strong sun, desert dryness, and High Atlas altitude/rapid weather changes are practical risks. Avoid animal bites; rabies is present in dogs.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least 1 month before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, polio, flu, varicella, shingles as applicable, and COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A for unvaccinated travelers, hepatitis B for many travelers, typhoid for most travelers, and rabies pre-exposure vaccine for higher-risk activities or limited access to prompt care. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and not required for Morocco entry.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is broadly practical for visitors with compatible phones. Morocco’s main mobile networks are Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc, and inwi. Orange Travel lists Morocco eSIMs using Orange, inwi, and Maroc Telecom partner networks, with install-before-arrival data options. Local prepaid SIMs are also common at airports and operator shops; expect ID/passport registration and check rural/desert coverage by route.
