Staying in Cambodia

Cambodia, officially the Kingdom of Cambodia, is a Southeast Asian nation renowned for its tropical climate, rich history, and the majestic Angkor Wat complex. Geographically, it is bordered by Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, with a coastline on the Gulf of Thailand. The country’s travel infrastructure is heavily centralized around key urban hubs: Phnom Penh (the capital), Siem Reap (gateway to Angkor), and Battambang. While agriculture remains the dominant economic sector, tourism has driven significant growth in hospitality and foreign investment. Travelers should note that Cambodia operates as a constitutional monarchy with the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) dominating the political landscape. The nation faces ongoing challenges including corruption and deforestation, though peace has been largely restored since the 1991 Paris Peace Accords. For hotel travelers, the market is characterized by a mix of international luxury brands in major cities and extensive boutique/resort options near heritage sites. Domestic transport relies on flights between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap/Sihanoukville, alongside road networks that vary in quality. Visa requirements are standard for most international visitors, but policies change; always verify with the nearest Cambodian consulate. Loyalty programs from major global chains have a growing footprint, particularly in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, offering consistent standards for frequent flyers.

Entry & getting around

Regional Structure & Hotel Bases

Hotel travel in Cambodia is distinctly city-centric. Phnom Penh serves as the primary hub for business and international transit, hosting the highest concentration of international chain hotels. Siem Reap, driven by the Angkor Archaeological Park, is the epicenter for cultural tourism, featuring numerous high-end resorts and boutique properties. Sihanoukville caters primarily to beach leisure travelers. Travelers should base themselves according to their itinerary: Phnom Penh for business/transit, Siem Reap for culture, and Sihanoukville or Kep for coastal relaxation.

Entry & Transport Overview

The main international gateways are Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) and Siem Reap International Airport (REP). For domestic transport, short-haul flights between Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville are the most efficient option. Overland travel relies on road networks, where conditions can vary significantly; long-distance buses or chartered vehicles are common alternatives. Regarding entry, most tourists require a visa, available via e-visa or visa on arrival. However, regulations are subject to change; always check with the nearest Cambodian consulate or embassy for the latest official requirements before traveling.

Loyalty Landscape

Cambodia is a significant market for major global hotel loyalty programs, with a strong footprint in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. International groups such as Marriott, Hilton, and IHG operate extensively here, offering a range of brands from luxury to select-service. For frequent flyers, these chains provide standardized service quality and points accumulation opportunities. In contrast, local boutique hotels and resorts, while charming, typically do not participate in global loyalty programs. Travelers seeking consistent benefits and status recognition should prioritize international chain properties.

Trip preparation

Health

Use safe food and water practices; avoid untreated freshwater swimming. Cambodia is hot and humid, so plan for hydration, sun protection, and rest in peak heat. Mosquito-borne risks include dengue, Zika, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, and malaria in some rural/forested areas; risk is negligible in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Angkor Wat. Altitude is not a typical visitor issue.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, polio, Tdap, flu, shingles where applicable, and COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A and typhoid for many travelers, hepatitis B for unvaccinated travelers, and considers Japanese encephalitis or rabies vaccine based on itinerary and exposure risk. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended for Cambodia itself, but a certificate is required for travelers age 1+ arriving from or transiting more than 12 hours through a yellow-fever-risk country.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is available from major local networks, but device compatibility and registration rules matter. Cellcard advertises eSIM purchase via its app or stores and has a Traveller SIM category; Smart advertises Smart eSIM and Smart Traveller SIM. Metfone is also a major Cambodian carrier, but travelers should verify current eSIM availability before arrival. Physical SIMs remain easy to find at airports, official shops, and reseller stores.
