Staying in Croatia

Croatia is a hotel-travel destination built around Adriatic coast stays, island access and compact historic cities, with Zagreb adding the clearest capital-city and business-hotel base. Most visitors organize itineraries around Zagreb, Istria and the Kvarner coast, the Dalmatian hubs of Split, Zadar and Šibenik, and Dubrovnik in the south. Croatia applies the Schengen acquis, so short stays are governed by Schengen visa and 90-in-180-day rules as officially described by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. Air access is anchored by Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik airports, while domestic movement is usually a mix of buses or car rental, HŽ passenger trains where routes fit, Croatia Airlines domestic sectors, and Jadrolinija or other ferry/catamaran links for islands. For hotel loyalty planning, Hilton Honors has the broadest official country listing among major global programs found, while Marriott Bonvoy is especially relevant in Zagreb and select coastal stays through Marriott-branded properties.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Gateways

Croatia has applied the Schengen acquis in full since 1 January 2023; third-country nationals’ short stays count toward the Schengen 90-days-in-any-180-days limit. For hotel itineraries, Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik are the practical international gateways to compare first.

Where to Base

Zagreb works best for capital-city culture, business travel and inland rail planning. Istria and Kvarner suit coastal resort stays, while Split, Zadar, Šibenik and Dubrovnik are the main Dalmatian bases for historic centers, beaches and island connections.

Getting Around

Getting around is best treated as a mixed network: HŽ provides passenger rail timetables and ticketing, Croatia Airlines covers selected domestic air links, and coastal or island trips often depend on Jadrolinija and other ferry or catamaran services.

Loyalty Landscape

Among major global hotel programs, Hilton Honors has the most visible official Croatia country listing, spanning Zagreb, Rijeka/Opatija, Dubrovnik and other destinations. Marriott Bonvoy is also useful, especially in Zagreb, where official Marriott pages list Westin and Sheraton properties.

Trip preparation

Health

For Croatia, use general traveler hygiene: choose safe food and drink, wash hands, and use treated/bottled water when hiking, camping, boating, or if local potability is uncertain. Summer heat, strong UV, swimming/boating risks, mosquitoes, sand flies, and ticks are practical concerns; use repellent and check for ticks after outdoor activity. No typical high-altitude concern on standard itineraries.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. CDC lists routine vaccines, COVID-19, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and measles/MMR as key considerations for Croatia. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine depends on animal-exposure risk and access to care. Tick-borne encephalitis vaccine may be considered for extensive outdoor/tick exposure in endemic areas. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and not required for entry.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is easy to arrange for many recent phones. Local mobile networks include Hrvatski Telekom, A1 Croatia, and Telemach; Hrvatski Telekom and A1 advertise tourist/prepaid eSIM data options that can be ordered online and activated by QR code/email. Check device eSIM support and coverage for islands, ferries, and remote parks before relying on it.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-06-20).
