Staying in Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern five-eighths of the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles. With a population of approximately 11.4 million, it is the second-most populous country in the Caribbean. The capital, Santo Domingo, hosts a metropolitan area of 3.6 million residents. As having the largest economy in the Caribbean, the nation is a premier destination for leisure travelers seeking resort experiences and for business professionals navigating its rapidly growing market. Travel infrastructure centers around key coastal hubs and the capital.

Entry & getting around

Accommodation Model & Regional Layout

Accommodation is heavily location-dependent. Destinations such as Playa Dorada, Punta Cana, and Bayahibe feature dense clusters of all-inclusive resorts, catering primarily to leisure travelers. Conversely, Santo Domingo and urban areas within Punta Cana offer a robust selection of business hotels and international chains suitable for corporate travel. Frequent flyers should choose their base based on whether the trip is leisure-focused or business-oriented.

Key Gateways & Domestic Transport

International travel is primarily facilitated through two main airports: Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo and Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). While domestic flights connect major tourist zones with the capital, road networks are more extensive. For travelers moving between different resort areas, renting a car or utilizing hotel shuttle services are common options, though road conditions and safety should be considered.

Entry & Visa Requirements

The Dominican Republic offers tourist cards or e-visas upon arrival for citizens of many countries, depending on nationality. A valid passport is required for entry. Visa policies are subject to change; therefore, travelers are strongly advised to check with the nearest Dominican Republic consulate or official government website for the most current entry requirements and exemptions before planning their trip.

Hotel Loyalty Landscape

Major international hotel loyalty programs have a strong footprint in the country. Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and IHG One Rewards maintain extensive portfolios in Santo Domingo and key tourist destinations. However, given the prevalence of all-inclusive resorts, some properties may be independent or part of smaller chains not participating in global loyalty programs. Frequent flyers should verify program participation when booking to ensure points earning and redemption opportunities.

Trip preparation

Health

Use normal traveler precautions: drink sealed or treated water when unsure, choose well-cooked food, wash hands, and avoid untreated freshwater where sanitation is poor. Mosquitoes can transmit dengue, Zika and malaria in some areas, so use repellent and screened/AC rooms. Beach areas are low altitude; mountain hikes can be hot, sunny and higher. After storms, avoid floodwater and muddy water.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least 1 month before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, polio, flu, varicella, Tdap, shingles as age-appropriate, plus COVID-19. CDC commonly recommends hepatitis A, hepatitis B and typhoid for many travelers; rabies pre-exposure may be considered for higher-risk activities or remote stays. Ask about malaria prevention for listed risk provinces. Yellow-fever vaccine is not recommended for direct U.S. travel, but proof may be required if arriving from Venezuela or specified Brazilian states, including certain long transits.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is practical in tourist areas if your phone is unlocked and compatible. Claro Dominicana officially supports eSIM, including prepaid, postpaid and control lines. Altice is another major local mobile carrier; confirm current eSIM/prepaid availability before arrival or at a carrier shop. Physical prepaid SIMs remain common, and travel eSIM providers sell Dominican Republic data plans, but check coverage for rural beaches and mountains.
