Staying in Cyprus

Cyprus, the third-largest island in the Mediterranean, is located off the coast of the Levant in West Asia. Its capital and largest city is Nicosia. The island is politically divided along the United Nations Buffer Zone: the southern part is governed by the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus, while the northern part is administered by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognized only by Turkey. Additionally, the British Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia remain under UK jurisdiction in the south. Historically, Cyprus has been a strategic crossroads contested by empires including Assyrian, Egyptian, Persian, Roman, Arab, Lusignan, Venetian, Ottoman, and British powers. Independence was granted in 1960, but intercommunal tensions led to the 1974 crisis and subsequent division. For frequent-flyer hotel travelers, understanding this geopolitical reality is essential. Access, mobility, and hotel infrastructure vary significantly between the Republic-controlled south and the north. Travelers must navigate distinct entry requirements and border controls, which directly impact itinerary planning, loyalty program redemption opportunities, and accommodation choices across the island's diverse regions.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

The main international gateways are Larnaca (LCA) and Paphos (PFO) airports. Transfers to cities or resorts are typically handled via taxi or hotel shuttle services. Due to the island's division, crossing the UN Buffer Zone requires passing through checkpoints, where visa status may affect admissibility. Domestic travel relies heavily on rental cars or hotel shuttles. Travelers should verify that their accommodation is within the Republic-controlled area to avoid potential border complications.

Where to Base: City vs. Resort

Cyprus's hotel landscape is distinctly regional. Nicosia, the capital, offers business and city-center accommodations. Coastal areas such as Larnaca, Paphos, and Limassol host a concentration of luxury resorts and beachfront hotels ideal for leisure travelers. Northern towns like Kyrenia and Famagusta also have hotel options, but access is subject to specific border regulations. It is advisable to base your stay in the major southern tourist hubs for more comprehensive hotel services and smoother travel logistics.

Loyalty Landscape

Major international hotel groups (such as Marriott, Hilton, IHG, and Accor) have a strong footprint in the Republic-controlled areas, particularly in Limassol, Paphos, and Larnaca, with multiple brand offerings. These chains generally accept global points redemptions and honor standard member benefits. In contrast, the northern region has lower penetration of international brands, with local or regional hotels being more prevalent. For frequent flyers, the southern region offers a richer selection of loyalty programs and more reliable access to member privileges.

Trip preparation

Health

Cyprus is generally low-risk for visitors: official tourism guidance says food and drinking-water quality is monitored and safe. Plan for strong sun and hot, dry summers; hydrate, use sunscreen, and limit strenuous activity in peak heat. Use insect repellent for mosquitoes/sand flies; CDC notes leishmaniasis risk from sand-fly bites. No malaria risk is listed by CDC. Altitude is not a typical issue, though Troodos mountain weather can be cooler.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. CDC advises being up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, flu, polio, varicella, Tdap and shingles where age-appropriate, plus COVID-19. Hepatitis A is recommended for unvaccinated travelers to Cyprus; hepatitis B is recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is usually only for higher-risk activities or limited access to care. Yellow-fever vaccine is not recommended and no yellow-fever certificate is required for entry.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is widely workable for compatible phones. Local mobile operators include Cyta, Epic and Primetel; Cyta offers eSIM for new soeasy pay-as-you-go connections, and Primetel offers eSIM with postpaid and pay-as-you-go, including travel-internet style data packs. Check device compatibility and bring passport/ID for local mobile registration. Coverage is strongest in cities, resorts and main roads; remote mountains may vary.
