Health
Use safe food and water habits: CDC has flagged Shigella in travelers returning from Santa Maria and Boa Vista. Mosquito-borne dengue and Zika risks exist, so use daytime and evening bite prevention. WHO certified Cabo Verde malaria-free in 2024, but check current alerts before travel. Heat, sun, wind and surf are practical issues; Pico do Fogo is above 2,500 m, so hikers should ascend sensibly.
Vaccinations
Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before departure. Be up to date on routine vaccines including MMR, polio, tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, flu and COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A for unvaccinated travelers, hepatitis B for unvaccinated travelers, and typhoid for most travelers; rabies or dengue vaccine may be discussed for specific risk profiles. Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended for Cape Verde itself, but a certificate is required for travelers aged 1+ arriving from yellow-fever-risk countries.
eSIM / connectivity
eSIM is available from local operators, so travelers with compatible unlocked phones have practical options. Unitel T+ advertises a fully digital eSIM for Cabo Verde with unlimited data during the stay, and Alou lists eSIM in its online store alongside mobile data offers. Coverage is strongest in towns and tourist islands such as Sal, Boa Vista, Santiago and São Vicente; expect gaps on remote hikes, ferries or small settlements.
